JadeWell, saying something's better or not is always kind of subjective, but I thought Baccano's plot and pacing was better & more consistent, while the second half of Durarara wasn't as much fun for me. The interesting thing is that there are a lot of references to Baccano in Durarara (at least in the first season), which surprised me at first. Oh really? Yeah, I liked the revelation in the first season about Mikado starting the Dollars. Also, Aoba hasn't been introduced yet, but it looks like he's going to be in this season, if the myanimelist page for him is correct. He sounds pretty interesting!

I'll have to give it a watch. I've been meaning to buy the novels, but I figured I'd finish reading DRRR!! first which is taking me way too long, I swearDamn I was hoping he'd be in there super early so we could get more Boss-Mikado. Ahh, I can't wait~~ Celty is super adorable in episode one. I died.

I'm trying to find an anime series but I don't know the name. They did a feature on it on NHK World about a week ago and it seemed like something I might be able to get into.
It's set in an all-girl school and one of the main characters is an exchange student from London. That's about as much as I can describe I'm afraid. They said there's a lot of implied romance, but no one ever actually dates one another. The girl from London has blonde hair I think. After that, I really can't say anything about it. The show was comparing the animation to the original manga, so focusing a lot on art style rather than story line. It sounded really interesting and I'd like to watch it, but I didn't catch the name.
Does it ring a bell with anyone?

Jembru I just did a quick google search, and I came up with Kinmoza. Does that look right?

Jembru I just did a quick google search, and I came up with Kinmoza. Does that look right? That's definitely it! The girl was called Alice for sure. It sounded really good from the program I saw, so I'll definitely be checking this out. Thanks so much for finding it for me Jade.

Kinmoza's the only one I can think of too. The sequel's currently airing, so that makes it more likely to show up on tv. It's very cute. I dropped it after the first episode because it was just too cute for me, and other series like Ikoku Meiro no Croisée did the whole East/West cultural exchange better. It might get better in later episodes though, or it just might not be my sort of thing.

I've seen the first two episodes so far and I actually like it! I guess going from Onegai My melody, this doesn't seem so bad.
The first episode felt very different, so it's a shame you were put off so quickly. Still, if girly isn't your thing then this definitely isn't the anime for you. There aren't actually any male characters in it at all so far. Just wall to wall females.
It's actually meant to be a comedy. While I wouldn't exactly rate it next to South Park, there has been a few moments that made me smile.. although, it's more like the smile a baby has on its face when it has wind.. I'll stick with it though. It's definitely entertaining.
I tried to get into K-on a few weeks back (mainly because I had the Japanese transcript so thought it would be good study material). I like the girly stuff, or at least anything aimed at younger viewers.. that carefully explains plotlines and doesn't use too many big fancy words... I couldn't get into K-on though. Maybe I didn't like the characters, maybe it just felt too cliche.. or just maybe it's my deep seated resentment at not trying harder with my guitar when I was in school.. take your pick ^^
This one feels different though. The style is deliberately girly-girly but it isn't taking itself seriously. It all feels tongue-in-cheek. I'm cautiously optimistic. Too many times I've found an anime I think I can get into and then quit 10 episodes in. You never know though. Maybe this is the show to win me over!

Quit!! I just couldn't stand their squeaky voices any longer. Why must young girls speak like that in anime? It's NOT cute or endearing in any way. It's just horrible horrible noise. You know, one time they employed a voice actress to record some of the dialogues on Jpod101. You know what happened? Dozens of complaints. It sounded unnatural and dumb outside of anime and was painful to listen too. It's just.. gah it's not cool.. stop it at once., you hear me Japan? Stop it..
Sigh. I like the concept though, so I might treat myself to the manga when I'm in Japan. That way I can give them my own voices, and make Alice speak with a broken English accent. BECAUSE SHE WOULD DO DAMMIT!!!

That's why I tend to stay away from anime with moe character designs (pretty much any show where the characters are supposed to be teenagers or older, but look more like 5 year-olds). It's one of my anime pet peeves... Glad the first episode was good though.
Hmm, the CORE 2000/6000 decks used anime voice actors, and those sounded good. I guess it depends whether they speak in their normal voice, or anime voice. The fun thing is that anime voice actors also do a lot of the voices for the Japanese dubs of movies that were originally in English. When I was studying for N2 I watched a lot of Japanese dubs of films I had already seen in English (especially the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, the one Japanese dub that I think is on par with the original voice track), and it was always fun to try to guess which anime I had heard certain characters voices in.

It's one of my anime pet peeves... Glad the first episode was good though. You'd think I'd be used to it, after Onegai My Melody though. I don't know if it was the difference in the way I was using them. I was dissecting Onegai My Melody, pausing and rewinding, making notes on how the language was used, adding vocabulary to anki and so on. I would even use it for shadowing at times (using my normal voice though). So I wasn't sitting back and watching it. I was trying to use this new series as something to watch in the background while doing housework or sitting at the dining table doing writing practice. It was just more distracting than anything else. Oh and I didn't enjoy the first episode! I didn't like it until Alice and Karen were in Japan. Then I started to see how the concept was meant to work and thought as a Brit learning Japanese with Japanese friends, I'd be able to relate to a lot of the humour. I can.. I just can't stand the voices. I'm going to keep an open mind, but honestly, I think I might be too old to be getting into anime. If I'd found it in my teens our younger and grown with it, I think it would be different, but I think I've just left it too late to feel that sense of magic and wonder I'm trying to capture. I have pokemon at least, and I'll still use anime as additional listening practice, so I don't have to be totally left out of conversations when the students start talking about anime (although I was laughed at last time I tried, so having such obscure tastes >.<). I still love welcome to the NHK though, so I'll watch that in the background while I'm doing housework. That and Hot Fuzz or To Kill a Mockingbird! ^^ When I was moaning to JP about this he said there's an anime I just HAVE to see.. He then showed me an old anime from the 1980's that was voiced by English actors (including Matt Lucas) speaking in thick regional accents and was genuinely shown on the BBC just a few years ago! I haven't laughed so hard in a while. Very, very entertaining. I'm not sure they even looked at the original transcript. I suspect they made it up like they did on The Magic Roundabout. I'd love to name it or post an episode, but it's not family friendly. There's bad language and sexual content throughout! I'm sure I've said enough to find it if anyone really wants to though. It's a bloody good giggle though. Best anime I've seen in years! ^^

Jembru Well, at least you know what you like and don't. I didn't really like the first episode either. Has anyone seen any of the latest Ghibli movies, Omoide no Marnie or Kaguya-hime no Monogatari? I thought the latter one was especially good.
