Jembru Looks like he hasn't had a major role in anything I've seen, but most of my anime knowledge is from around 2000-present. He's had a few minor roles in things I've seen though, but nothing that memorable.

He's done loads of stuff but he's probably most known for playing Sazae's father in Sazae-san. A news thread sounds cool! There's a tribute statue of the family, and people have placed flowers around the statue of his character. They showed a clip from his funeral, where the voice actresses of his wife and daughter from the show (I don't remember their names, sorry), gave him their respects in the voices of the characters they play. It was so moving somehow. I don't know the anime at all, but I think checking it out will be a nice way to get to know the man that Japan is mourning. Okay, we can start a thread, but like I said, I'm lucky if I get to watch Japanese TV once a month these days (before bed in the morning doesn't count, because all I could report on is how good the latest roller-ball vacuum cleaner is, or how you just can't live without that massage chair...). So I don't know how often I could update personally. It might encourage other members to watch live Japanese TV though, and that could only be a good thing.

I think Sazae-san is world's longest running animation and everyone in Japan knows it so it's definitely worth checking out! It's the daily life of a 'typical' Japanese family - Sazae, her parents and sister, and Sazae's husband and children.

So, it's a few weeks into the new anime season. Anyone watch any good anime lately? Either of the currently airing shows, or something which aired earlier.

'Anyone watching any good anime lately?' lol, gods no.. as usual I'm watching weird stuff that no one else is remotely interested in discussing with me ^^. So, JP being a massive Yugioh nerd, is now watching the new series. I'm really enjoying watching it so far, although due to sleeping for work, I haven't seen every episode... I love that having gotten used to the vocabulary used in the battle scenes, and the necessarily abrupt style of the Japanese used, I now get to hear the keigo equivalent of the same kind of language. The main character wants to be an entertainer, so all his monsters have a kind of circus or stage magic theme. At times (very marked in today's episode), he will start performing to the audience, addressing them as a performer would, so using more polite language. It's really useful listening practice.
I've mentioned it before, but as it is currently being aired (and probably still will be next time we discuss the 'new season'), we're still watching pokemon. We don't watch it live though. It's aired on a week day (Wednesday?, Thursday?), when JP is usually at work. So he watches it on youtube in the evening. People are very quick at getting the new episodes uploaded luckily! There's not much to report about the series though. It's pretty much the same as ever.. Satoshi loses, then he learns an important lesson and gets stronger, then he wins. Okay, not every week, but it sure feels like it. My favourite part of the show is the haiku at the end of every episode. I like to try to translate them into English, and then JP will sometimes try to make an English equivalent that still fits. I hope one day I can follow grown-up anime as well as I can follow Pokemon. I guess it would help if I would actually watch it!!
Really, I just watch whatever JP does though. Anime is mainly listening practice to me at the moment, but now and then I get caught up in a really good series and watch it for the story.
Actually, this is kind of realated. I was talking to my friend last night who helped me work out that I'm actually really into animated shows, but I seem to prefer western made, probably just because they feel more familiar and give me a pleasant nostalgic feeling. I didn't really have access to anime growing up; I'm slightly too old so missed growing up with dragon ball Z and pokemon (not that I didn't LOVE pokemon as a very uncool 16 year old!). So I've decided to start watching some of my favourite Western made shows in Japanese for a while. I think I'll start by watching The Power Puff Girls like you suggested in your JLPT article Rin! I want to watch other shows, so if anyone knows where I can find Japanese dubs of western cartoons, please throw some links my way. I would LOVE to see the new Thundercats in Japanese actually. I haven't seen it in English yet, and I'm kind of ashamed of that. I'm sure there must be a Japanese version somewhere, because I heard they used Japanese animators in making the show.

Jembru, I'd like to point out that liking Pokemon at the age of 16 is most definitely cool and not uncool. I've been watching Kindaichi as I love crime and mystery and I've been a Kindaichi fan for years. Other than that not much has caught my eye.

Jembru, I'd like to point out that liking Pokemon at the age of 16 is most definitely cool and not uncool. I've been watching Kindaichi as I love crime and mystery and I've been a Kindaichi fan for years. Other than that not much has caught my eye. Where were you when I was 16? Seriously, I was spending all my wages from my part time job waiting tables, on pokemon cards at the weekends, trading with kids half my age. When I started 6th form, I managed to find all the pokemon fans in the college (all 4 of them). While our classmates were sneaking off to the pub for a spot of under aged drinking, we would all pile into my place during free periods to battle one another on pokemon stadium. Mind you, had I never been into pokemon, I wouldn't have told my careers advisor that after uni, I wanted to move to Japan and become a pokemon master. Had that never happened, on graduating and realising my chances of finding paid work in zoology were slim to non-existent, I'd never have decided to follow that old dream and move to Japan.. then I'd never have become interested enough in the language to want to study it and I'd probably not be sat here now. So I don't regret those sober afternoons on the N64. I had plenty time to discover the evils of alcohol later in life...

Zankyou no Terror seems interesting! I'll probably give Tokyo Ghoul and Aldnoah.Zero a look as well.

chocopie Yeah, I'm excited about Tokyo Ghoul as well! Judging by the first episode, it looks like it's going to be a very dark series, which I like.

I feel bad, I haven't looked into any of the summer anime except Sailor Moon Crystal(;´▽`A`` which I really liked
I might watch Tokyo Ghoul, Zankyou no Terror, Re:_Hamatora (although I'll have to find season one first), and probably the second season of Kyoukai no Kanata, the K movie, and the circus arc of Kuroshitsuji eventually too.

Jade I watched the first Sailor Moon episode to see what it was like. I'm afraid to say I really don't like the new opening song. Bring back Moonlight Densetsu!! Bokusenou I liked the first episode of Tokyo Ghoul too! Aldnoah.Zero I watched a couple of minutes and then gave up. The first girl who speaks had one of those squeaky, high-pitched voices I can't get through a series of that.

chocopie Haha, a lot of people want Moonlight Densetsu back, huh? I liked MOON PRIDE, I thought it was cute♥ What were your thoughts on the CG transformation sequence?

Jade Is Sailor Moon Crystal worth watching for those who haven't seen the original series? I think I might have seen parts some of episodes growing up, but I completely forgot what happened. I also saw some episodes dubbed in portuguese when I was visiting some relatives in Brazil a while back, but I couldn't understand much, and the only thing I remember about those was that a mirror popped out of the "victim of the week"'s chest every episode. chocopie Yeah, I just hope Tokyo Ghoul doesn't turn into a generic shounen fighting show, and stays as dark as the first episode was. If the second episode is as good as the first then I'll probably follow it for the season. I watched the first episode of Aldnoah because people were giving it good reviews & Urobuchi Gen was involved with it...Although I normally like world-building, this time long info-dumps lost me, though I liked that they killed off the annoying princess character at the end of the episode. The explosions at the end, and a good soundtrack weren't enough to save the series for me. I might follow Barakamon, as I found it a surprisingly solid slice of life show (though nothing brilliant), and I'm still waiting on Zankyou no Terror, but so far this is stronger than last season, but still a weaker season than I had hoped...Maybe I'll go back to tackling things on my "want to watch" list if I only end up following a few series this season.
