魔Hmm, most of the space series I like are very, very different from each other. Is it more of a comedy, a drama, or a little of both? There are spaceship scenes and on land scenes. Like star wars with a different story. It has a little drama. There is more comedy. Most of the episodes are side stories. There is a main sort of story going on with back stories to it. It reminds me a little of the long anime filler episodes. I think it's above average.

Sorry for the late reply here. I actually wrote a reply about 3 days ago but accidentally deleted it before I sent it and it takes me so long to write a post that I just couldn't bring myself to restart!
Anyway, thanks for the explanations everyone. So I guess one piece is just one of the worst offenders for being a poor fansub. I can see why some people might appreciate a more 'japanarizes' version of the dialogue but I just find it too awkward. So I've decided to put a hold on watching for now while I read JP's Japanese version of the manga. I'm adding common pirate/one piece specific vocabulary to anki and when I'm done with the manga (it's only one book), I'll continue watching without subtitles. JP should be able to help me out if there are important plot points I couldn't catch.
I feel like I've gone from zero to anime snob in just 3 weeks, but I just don't enjoy it with the weird subtitles, and the whole reason I wanted to get into anime was so I could enjoy Japanese as much as my peers seem to.

Here's a pun/play on words I just came across.
Skeleton:You have a great suji (aptitude).
kid: I do?
Skeleton: I don't have any suji (muscle) though.

Did they translate the pun too? There are a few kiddies anime I watch sometimes, just for the listening practice and one of them (onegai my melody), has a character who makes puns all the time. The person who translated that usually puts the Japanese in brackets so you can understand why everyone is groaning. If I remember correctly, I learnt the word 'hadaka' from one of his bad puns. Too bad it's too sickly girly for most learners to tolerate... As for me, I fell for tha advertising and shameless product placing, so have decided all my study stationary will be My Melody next year... Suckered!! Lol

That reminds me of a pun from Fushigi Yuugi! It's stuck with me, possible because it's the only one I can recall that was well translated. One of the characters was outside a building, and the door slammed shut. In Japanese he said 「しまった!」 and the subs said "Oh shut!" It still makes me laugh!

Yakitate Japan is a good anime for puns, it explains them too. Almost all the episodes have something like this.

Woah, that was one impressive translation Chocopie! Very clever. I remember JP telling me the Japanese and English names of pokemon. The more recent generations are often quite well translated so that the pun remains intact in the Japanese name. Sadly the man himself is out tonight so I can't ask him for examples. 魔: That anime looks like it could be quite amusing. Is it a long running show like One Piece, or does it know when to quit? ^^

Jembru It has 69 episodes I've made it to the latest episode of Naruto and One piece. I'll either keep watching the short series now, or find a long one.

At the rate I'm watching, it will take me years to catch up with One Piece. Maybe one day I'll catch flu and be too sick to do anything, so just watch back-to-back episodes all day to cover a little more ground. For now though, I'm managing one or 2 episodes a week, so won't catch up any time soon.
You know something is wrong when you're looking forward to having flu..

Jembru Hmm, maybe just try to take it at your own pace, and really enjoy the episodes you do watch? Or you can do what I do when I really want to catch up on a series: read the Wikipedia episode summaries and Google an image of each new character as they are introduced. It's not nearly as fun as watching the full episodes though. ^^;

I've started watching Bleach. It's a different story to what I thought. Instead of being about ninja's, it's more about ghosts.
Here's a play on words from it that I figured out myself. The subtitles didn't explain it.
His name is いちご, but his sister refers to him as いちに.
I'm guessing the ichi is his name and the ni is referring to oniisan/ani and means brother. Also she might be saying it because it means one, two.
The translation completely ignores it. You'll hear "ichini" and read "ichigo" in the subtitles. Someone who doesn't know any Japanese will be very confused.

Woah, that's a lot! I don't think I'd have the courage to take on a series that long...
