Paint Tool Sai! LittleGaijinI make my canvas very big and then crop them when I'm done, 300pi will give you the best quality. These are the only really useful brushes for me. The pen is great for lineart, I wouldn't use the ink one because it's fuzzy. though I'm sure I could fix that. I only ever use the air brush for glowing things since it looks a bit tacky. And then there's the marker which is my main colouring tool, which is what makes everything look like watercolours. These are my settings, and what I've decided works best for me, you can mess around with it if you'd like, find what works for you and whatnot. The 'min size' is basically the pressure of the pen, it means that if you press very light the pen will go down to size zero and really hard it'll go as big as the brush size you have on. The density is opacity, how see through it is. You've got some brushes in there, I recommend using the fine-flat one since it makes it look like actual brush strokes. At 100% it'll be as smooth as possible, while if you lower the number it'll be bristly. The blending and persistence is up to you entirely. I use low numbers for dark lines and higher ones for smooth blended skintones. I recommend using the water tools to blend the markers together. Now this is a bit of a tip, it's not for everyone though. If you have a shaky hand or your lines are messy you can try this, it's at the top of the page. It'll stabilize your lines for you, make them smooth and whatnot. It's a lifesaver sometimes. Other than that, it's very simple, I don't suggest you use the lineart layer since it's mostly for cellshading, it won't work well with painting styles. If you draw your lines on the wrong layer just make one above and on mode use 'multiply'. Trust me, you'll eventually do it and not want to draw it all over again. The crop tool is in the 'canvas' drop down. Selection tools are above the brushes. And under 'filter' is your hue and saturation. Also the magic wand sucks for selecting, but if you need to select details use the 'select' brush in the brush section. Now you know how to use Sai :')

vino LOL oh nice. Good 'cause I don't wanna pay for it either haha! You are so nice, thank you soooooo incredibly much! I'm going to download this tonight and give it another shot! I would absolutely love a tutorial and any tips you've got for me. When I tried SAI before, the only friend I had who used SAI at the time was an anime style cell-shader, so her tips didn't really help me much... but I think our coloring styles are very similar! Roger that!! I'll probably do a black shirt, or the red plaid!! And thank you! I'll finish your sketch long before I finish the digital art, so I'll be sure to send you that! I'll try to really focus on the eyes for you! Your eyes are dark brown, or light? Hard to tell! My eyes are extreeeemely dark brown, they just look black unless you shine a light right on it.

LittleGaijin Phew, I had some free time so I got this done. I only did a headshot because it's one of those days and I cannot get anything right. Let me know if there's anything you don't like about it, I can mess about with it. No rush on your end I was really just bored heh.

vino OH MY GOOOOOOOOD this is so amazing!! This is seriously the best art I've ever received, I mean it! Thank you soooo much!!!!! Your style just kills me, I wish I could draw with a tablet and color like you do. And you can draw me better than I can even draw myself, I was so shocked! I'm so in love with the eyes, and the skin, and that haaaiiir! (Wait... is that narcissistic to say? Lol!) I'm going to ask my friend to put this on a mug for me. I want to see this every day! I'm going to start your sketch tonight and I will show it to you tomorrow if I can! And thank you sooo much for all the SAI tutorials!! So many awesome tips in here, I appreciate this so much! Good to know that there's something to do to make my lines look less sloppy, because I do have a shaky hand! (In my defense, my tablet is on the super dooper small size. So many friends are begging me to save up and get a tablet with a screen built in. What tablet do you use?) I'm going to try coloring your piece with SAI... so nervous, but I'm going to do my best! The last time I seriously tried coloring a piece with SAI, I ended up going back and forth from SAI to Photoshop a couple dozen times. I could almost hear the PSD file SCREAMING in pain by the time I was done, LOL. Here goes nothing! ♪ Oh! If you were using a big canvas for my piece, do you still have the larger image on file? (^o^)

LittleGaijinAh, I'm so glad you liked it! I wasn't sure if you would. As for the tablet wow that is tiiiiiny. No wonder you can't get much done on it. I've got two, the Bamboo CTH-670 and the CLT-470
The 670 is bigger but they're both great. It really just depends on how much money you're willing to spend, I guess. The ones that are screens are very expensive, I wish I could afford one myself, they look awesome.

JembruThank you! I'm glad you guys liked it so much I was afraid I'd been too boring with the pose and expression. LittleGaijinI uploaded the Sai file for you if you still want it, I'd already cropped it but you can make it big again with the settings where the crop tool is.

Ahhhh thank you thank you vino!! Maybe I can turn this into a T-Shirt and set the town on fire with my face on my chest, LOL. Thank you for giving me the file! Yep, so I'm basically drooling over your tablet pictures. Very much so. Now, if only you could put that into a file, and Media Fire that my way? Haha just kidding! So, out of these two, which one do you like best? The bigger one? And how much were these?? I've had my little guy for 6 years now, I think it's time to get him a replacement already! Do you think if I got a better tablet, it would make that much more of a difference in my art? And sorry I couldn't post a sketch for you today!! I got caught up in working on a special article for next week, but I finished just now (lol it's 5:17am, I should probably sleep now) so I'll get on that later today for sure! So intimidated to make it look perfect for you!! JEMMA, I KNOW RIGHT???!! THIS CRAZY GUY DIDN'T THINK I WOULD LIKE IT! WHAT THE HELL? "BORING POSE AND EXPRESSION" HE SAYS... YEAH, UM NO. TRY "ABSOLUTELY STUNNING, SCARY ACCURATE AND SUPER DUPER FLATTERING". I LOVE THIS WAY TOO MUCH.

LittleGaijin Hahaha I'm glad you like it that much, I'm the one who's flattered (▰˘◡˘▰) I would honestly say the smaller one is easier to handle, I mean the big one's great but kind of weird to get used to. The first tip I ever learnt about drawing with a tablet is that each corner of your drawing tablet represents each corner of your monitor, so the bigger the tablet, the more you have to move your hand to fit the drawing into it. So I'd say the second one is a medium size and that's the perfect size for most monitors! As for whether it'll improve the way you draw, it'll be more comfortable and probably have more options and settings, think of it as a tool for you to improve your experience and making it more comfortable and easy, making you want to draw more and therefor improve a lot more. I mean look, I'll show you some of my art throughout the years, all with different tablets. (Granted age and practice had a lot to do with it.) 2009 (first tablet it was awful) 2010 (second) 2011 (third) 2012 (the one I used the longest) 2013- 2014/ 2 (the two I use now) A loooot has changed about my art really, hell I even changed my signature hahah I do think tablets have a lot to do with our art. And I do hope you're getting some sleep!

vino ahhhhhh, I see! Kind of like a person adjusting from an iPhone to an iPad, or a small canvas to a freaking huge canvas with so much empty space that by the time you're done you just die inside. LOL. I'd probably go for your slightly smaller, medium sized tablet then; big transitions in art always start massive art blocks for me! Oh gosh, thank you so much for showing me all your older art!! So you sketch it all out digitally, and then you line it afterwards most the time? And wow!! Massive jump from 2011 and 2012! Your 2014 makes me want to cry because I can never get full bodies right like this, lol. Your art is so pretty, so jealous! This is really an inspiration for me though! And here's all my crap throughout the years... 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, then I gave up digital for most of 2011-2012, 2013 summed up. 2013: I realized that erasing the original sketch's scan layer at the end is actually a good thing, a very good thing, and that I can F up noses in a new variety of funny, unflattering ways. Still working on your sketch, don't freak out! I just can't get your pretty eyes right, and I was sick over the last few days!

vino , jeez I took almost a month to do this, I'm so sorry!! I've been really busy with work, and university applications... but here it is! And I'm really, really sorry for the wait! Here's the original sketch as well. I really hope you like it! I might've got the skin tone (and a few other things) wrong... no matter what I do, I always end up yellowing skin tones in all my artwork! Also, I ended up using Photoshop... I downloaded SAI, and I tried to follow all your tips and the tutorial post you wrote for me, but I was just way too lost and unfamiliar! Rage quit! ➜ Boop.Hey Jacob ! Vino uses SAI, but I mainly use Photoshop for all mine.

Thought I would break the 16 day silence with my mediocrity. Using sai and have no idea what I'm doing.

Awww, naitorii this is so cute! I really love her hair! So you use Sai? Sai is a really difficult program to master, so this is impressive to me! Did you sketch it on the computer, or was it a scan? I've pretty much given up on free-hand sketching digitally, so almost all my work was first sketched on paper, and then scanned and re-lined digitally.

It was sketched on paper because my tablet's surface is so slippery, then I scan, linework over and try to keep a steady hand(Sometimes I get on PDN and cheat with line tool though, not this though) and add color using PDN. I spent hours and hours on that hair, by the way.
