I used to do these types of pictures before I started learning Japanese. DAMN BOY! These are so awesome, but I must say that my favorite is this one of yours because of all the crazy details! It looks like you spent weeks on this; how long did it take? I also like how it looks like a blanket on the default, small image size! Jeez, I wish I had a nice big blanket with that design!! Do you not do art anymore? I had this discussion with Wes... that some people have to give up their other hobbies in order to study Japanese seriously. It's sad to hear, but I know even I have to continuously trade one for the other too.

I'm currently studying a particular artist's style of painting animals, so I decided to a thing for Gaiwachan... I hope that more people will do art of Gaiwachan too! That would be rad!

I can't really remember how long that one took. I think most of them took around 10 hours or so. Spread out over however long. link
This one took the longest, over 100 hours. I did half of it, then maybe a year or 2 later the other half. I'd stopped ages before I started learning Japanese. I'll probably start again at some point. I might start colouring again while listening to Japanese lessons.

I really love how the designs on the outer corners are done in reverse to how you've colored in everything else (red shape with blue marks, to blue shade with red marks)! What inspires you to create pieces like this? Listening to Japanese lessons or podcasts during art is a really good idea, I think I'll try that too!!

I've been drawing for some time and have recently been paying more attention to experimenting with different painting and colouring styles. I don't have a DA any longer but I do post some stuff on Tumblr sometimes. Some of my art. I'd be cool with doing art trades sometime if anyone's interested.

vino hah, I used to be such a cell-shader though! After I quit digital in high school, I got obsessed with acrylic paint, and by the time I returned to digital (last year) my digital art just evolved I guess. Looking at your stuff, I'm really honored that you think my stuff looks like a painting style! Your art looks like it was done delicately with water color paint, and for a second I didn't think it was digital! I love all the beautiful textures you use too! I'm a serious sucker for your style. I remember giving a similar style a try once, and epic, epic fail. Hmm, could I ask for a simple self portrait? I just posted a drawn reference above your post, but I didn't add a yellow star on my sweater yet (that's the only thing missing from this, it's the fugly dog's fault). And what would you like at of?? (^_^)

I've been experimenting with my colouring for quite some time since it's my favourite part of drawing. Ah, sure, sure, I can get started on it tomorrow, and I suppose I could ask for the same, since I don't actually have all that much I want drawn at the moment. If you'd like to link me to some pictures of you I can give you some of mine, I do better with picture refs. Here's some of mine, I'm one of those people who barely take photos with their face in the shot so don't mind my hair it's just short and brown hahah. [ x][ x][ x]

vino does SAI still do that 30-day-free-trail? I can't find their website anymore, but I really wanted to try it again. I use Photoshop Elements 6.0 (it's pathetically all I know, lol). I tried SAI once, and got so fed up with the layers and couldn't understand all their different brushes... so I rage quit. I LOVED the line art in SAI though, I miss it soooo much. I suck at line art. It's my least favorite part. Okay, I made this photobucket album with some references for you! Let me know if you need more. I usually ask for a dark grey/black sweater with a big yellow star, and dark blue jeans with boots if it's full body. Half-body would be really awesome though, and easier for you! I'll probably be doing half-body. (Point is, I don't have any refs of the outfit though, sorry!) Oh and there's a few more refs on my staff page. I'll try to start asap, but I've got some work on the site that I have to catch up on first. So please, please take your time! I usually take my time with these things, but it always gets done! (It's because I start traditionally with a really finalized sketch, then I have to scan it and completely cover it digitally to the point where the sketch layer gets deleted at the end... my routine is so tedious haha! All because I can't really do nice sketches with my tablet.)

I can give you a bit of a Sai tutorial if you want, simplify it and give you some tips and secrets about it. It's honestly the best program for people who colour in paint style like us and it's a loooot more simple and it seems. Also for my clothes you can't go wrong with a plain black shirt or a hoodie, other than that I wear a red plaid shirt very often, like the one in the picture with my red hair. Those are really nice sketches, I love the way you draw eyes wow.

vino LOL oh nice. Good 'cause I don't wanna pay for it either haha! You are so nice, thank you soooooo incredibly much! I'm going to download this tonight and give it another shot! I would absolutely love a tutorial and any tips you've got for me. When I tried SAI before, the only friend I had who used SAI at the time was an anime style cell-shader, so her tips didn't really help me much... but I think our coloring styles are very similar! Roger that!! I'll probably do a black shirt, or the red plaid!! And thank you! I'll finish your sketch long before I finish the digital art, so I'll be sure to send you that! I'll try to really focus on the eyes for you! Your eyes are dark brown, or light? Hard to tell!
