I felt so happy. For the next two years I kept the same hairstyle.
嬉しい and 幸福 in the same sentence... One of them had to go.

However, it wasn't until junior high school that I realised her words had been nothing more than an empty compliment.
Is 'empty compliment' something that people say? I can't decide if it sounds ok or not in English...

Is 'empty compliment' something that people say? I can't decide if it sounds ok or not in English... I say it, if that helps! It's definitely an expression that exists at any rate. This story is so sad. I just want to give the girl a hug and then take her to a Print Club or Print Seal and make stickers of us pulling faces together that she can plaster all over her notebooks... I'd walk along the corridor and she'd walk right on by, surrounded by several friends. I thought it sounded ok at first, but because it's also a very literal translation of the Japanese I then got confused...

chocopieYeah, I've said it and heard it too. JembruDon't worry, it gets somewhat happier after she finds the phone.^^ 一瞬《いっしゅん》、わたしの顔を見て、彼女は友達に耳打ちした。 She looked at me for a moment, then whispered into her friend's ear. 「あの子、少し前からあの髪形なんだけど、似合ってないよね」 "That girl, she's had that hairdo for a little while now, but it really doesn't suit her, does it?" I had quite a lot of that kind of experience (literally "that kind of experience accumulated in large number"), and it's gotten so that I'm nervous whenever I talk to people.

In the end, I became a sort of peculiar being to them, and everyone treated me as if they were touching a tumor.

JembruI think 'odd one out' sounds more natural. 'I alone am an outsider' kind of sounds like there could be more outsiders. The worst thing is breaktime.

Those who were on good terms with each other all formed cliques, and of course I had no choice but to sit alone.

Bokusenou: Yeah, it probably would have sounded weird to translate as 'colony'. I wonder if maybe 'cliques' would have captured the same nuance? The more cheerfully boistrous the class became, the more lonely and isolated I felt by the emptiness around me.
