I just wanted to update, because maybe I'm not alone in my behaviour towards anki.
So, I mentioned a while ago that I was having to get through over 200 reviews a day, often more towards 300! I was scared to miss a day and anki was starting to take over my life. Well I'm glad to report that I have taken back control.
I started by doing my reviews from bed, before I got up. Somehow, I can concentrate better, and I don't keep havng to put down my tablet to do something else.. which I think was adding to the feeling of anki always being there, sapping my free time.
The other thing I've done, is convince myself to stop marking everything as hard. I was scared before, that the intervals were too long, because I had convinced myself there was something wrong with me and I couldn't learn as well as other people. This seems to have been the cause of the massive number of reviews each day. I've realised now, that by marking familiar words as easy, I am freeing myself up to focus on less well known words. If not, I can always mark it incorrect when it does finally pop up again! This has pretty much halved my daily reviews without changing the rate at which I absorb new information!
So my next mission, is to start deleting cards that contain words I know I'd never forget. I just can't bring myself to just yet, but I know I should. They may only pop up every few months, but I have a fair few now and the time the take to review does add up I guess...

I've started using Anki again. Just with this course though - Japanese Core 2000 Step 01 Listening Sentence Vocab + Images I'd recommend it just for the listening reviews it has. It does single words and sentences. I'm trying not to add too much, so I'm reviewing that everyday(although I've missed the odd day). Once I've gotten to the end I'll download step 2. So my next mission, is to start deleting cards that contain words I know I'd never forget. I just can't bring myself to just yet, but I know I should. They may only pop up every few months, but I have a fair few now and the time the take to review does add up I guess... If you want to practice speedreading. Get a book you'll never ever read and go through it as quickly as you can. Try downloading a ready made deck and ignoring everything you already know. I'm trying to become more ruthless with my ignoring. I don't think I'll every forget this is a tree 木. Although if there's a review that says "wood" or "timber". I might keep it because I don't associate it as much.

Can you ignore items sadly though? Or would I have to delete everything I already know?
I'm doing core 2000 step 3 and 4 on memrise, but I've had to ignore a lot. They don't have any other steps after that though (although I don't know how many more there even is after that). So I'm thinking of continuing with the core vocabulary on anki. I really don't want to have to manually delete hundreds of cards though. I just want to fill in the gaps in my knowledge, because I've learnt words as I've needed them, rather than any logical order.
The core vocabulary have been great for teaching me the boring stuff I never cared enough about to learn, because it looks like the list was compiled from newspaper word counts. I never cared about political vocabulary for example, but now I've forced myself to learn that, and some of the more formal words that tend not to show up in everyday conversation, I must admit I'm following more when I watch the news now. So they're worth knowing at least passively, and maybe I'd need those words if I ever decide to take an exam.

I ignore them as I'm reviewing. On Anki I press delete. On memrise - i then enter.
It looks like there's 10 parts to the core 2000 on anki.

Thanks for the quick reply! Oh I had meant to write 'easily' not 'sadly', it happens a lot when I type on my phone! ^^
I've never downloaded a deck on anki before, so I have a few questions...
Is each step downloaded separately? So could I say, download step 5 and if it's not for me, I don't have 2000 unwanted cards on anki?
Are they automatically added to your main deck, or will they appear in their own separate deck (that I could therefore delete altogether)
Memrise has kana to English and kanji to English. Is this just the creator who designed the memrise course, or does the anki version have kana to englsh too? It's easy to 'ignore all' on memrise, but this could get very tedious on anki.
Okay, that's all for now. ^^

Okay, that's all for now. ^^ They're separate decks. Each step has around 400 cards. So for all the steps there are 4000 or so. They're a mixture of words, sentences, listening. I made another profile to put the core decks in. That way they won't mix in with the ones you already have. Try step 1 and see what you think link (it says beginner, but it's probably closer to intermediate) On memrise the creator chooses how the levels are reviewed. I don't know about ignoring all, I just ignore them as they come.

Why didn't I think of that? That's a great idea. When I'm done on memrise, I'll set up a second profile for core vocabulary. I can use that every now and then on my laptop like I do with memrise, and keep my tablet for my regular anki. I have a while to go yet (I'm still on step 3), before I'm done with memrise, but that's definitely what I'll do. I like the thought that the cards will test my active and passive ability with words. I think sometimes we become good at recalling words on anki, but not so good when we're using the language for real.. having a varied review, even of words I believe I know well enough, should be useful! Thanks for the great tip! I'll definitely be doing that!

It's interesting to see how other Gaiwa members handle their Anki decks. I tend to make small topical decks or get premade ones, wait until I've pretty much learned it (daily reviews 20 or less) and then add a tag to all of them before merging them into the main deck.

Can you separate your cards by tag though? I can't work out how to do it. I wasted several hours going through anki and tagging everything, so I could review just verbs, or just cards with sentences and so on, but then when I try to custom study, there is a choice that says 'limit to particular tags', then I'll click on it and it doesn't allow words to be inputted. I'd rather review tags in my entire collection too, not just one deck... If there isn't a way to review cards with particular tags, what the heck's the point of having tags anyway?

Sorry for such a late reply. Hmm.. I wonder if it is just an issue with anki droid then? I'll have to give this a try when I next get some free time! Thanks so much for the links Rin. I was so disappointed when it wouldn't work before.

I was so disappointed when it wouldn't work before. Hm, I haven't tried it on Ankidroid. Most of the time I use my computer for adding cards & editing decks, and just use Ankidroid for reviewing. Glad the links are helpful!

So update then...
I managed to get the filtering to work! It does seem to be something with ankidroid, but I can empty and rebuild my deck from my tablet now that it has been set up via the desktop version! Thanks for the advice there.
The other thing is that I finally talked myself into downloading one of the core decks today. I wish I'd done it so much sooner. It is much more fun than my regular reviews. I haven't finished deleting all the words I can already read (I'm keeping all the sentences whether I can already read them or not.. I figured I can just keep clicking 'easy' so they don't clog up my daily reviews too much), but I love it so far!! Actually, I'm kicking myself that I didn't do this sooner. Gosh.. to think I've been making my own cards like a sap all this time... ^^
Oh and while it no longer matters thanks to the above, I HAD wittled my cards down to under 2000. However, I now have 2777 (honestly, that's the number!), thanks to the fact the core deck have multiple cards for the same word. Still, not knowing exactly how many words I've memorised since starting anki is a small price to pay for how cool the core decks are!

I've started learning how to write from memory using this deck - link I set the front cards to prompt with the readings and in tiny lettering the stroke count underneath. I try and guess the kanji and draw it in my head. I write the kanji in my little book, and read the example words.

That's a pretty sweet deck! I was thinking of creating a deck for writing but decided I have enough reviews on anki without adding a new deck. Still, I'm doing something similar only handwritten. I mentioned this somewhere before but may have been the old forum because it's been so long since I studied kanji. I use a plastic cover for trading cards that I stole off JP and put in 2-sided piece of paper (I have 2 sanrio character notepads that just happen to be just the right size). I write the kana on one side and the kanji on the other. Usually no more than 5 words at a time since I learnt that's the most we can comfortably hold in our short term memory. It fits in the credit card slots in my wallet and I can use it to practice reading or writing depending on which side I use as a prompt. It can't tell me stroke order like your anki deck does though!
