I just suggested in the lang-8 thread, that we should start a thread for the flashcard application anki, so I figured why not do that myself! It was a member of the conversation group who joined us back in May, who advised me to use this app. I'd actually heard of the program prior to that, but I already used flashcards (well, notebooks with folding pages) and as these could be thrown in my backpack and studied from work, I didn't see how a program on my computer could make any difference. Yet this guy who told me about anki, was so enthusiastic and his Japanese was considerably better than mine, despite having studied for just a year and a half (although a year of that WAS on an intensive course in Japan!). He warned me though, that the longer you use anki, the more of your time it demands as it just grows and grows. What I like about this app is that once you've downloaded the program to your PC, you can then sych up your cards on anki web, to study them from any PC. There is also a phone app that syncs up via anki web, with your PC list (although I've found I have to manually tell it to sych, while the PC version does it automatically every time I open and close. If anyone is interested in giving this application a go, you can download it here: ankisrs.netIt allows you to create your own cards, but if you want, you can also download hundreds of pre-made cards. I've never done this, but I've heard it's good if you're preparing for the JLPT, as you can download decks of JLPT vocabulary. It has taken me a while to really get to know this app and work out the best ways to manage my cards and my time when I use it, but these days, I really prefer it to the old hand-written vocabulary lists I used to use. So, I'm quite interested to hear what others who use this app have to say. How long do you spend on it each day? How do you manage yours cards and organize your study with anki? I have just picked up my tablet to see how many reviews are due today. It says 202, which is about average. It was worse last week, because the September bootcamp cards were all up for review and I was adding 20+ new cards per day at some points during that week! Here is a rundown of my decks; -Adverbs, interjections and conjunctions -August Vocabulary -Bootcamp vocabulary -October bootcamp (these 2 are stacked together) -Expressions -Grammar and usage -Interesting phrases and idioms -July vocabulary -June vocabulary -May vocabulary (these 3 are stacked together) -Kanji -Minecraft vocabulary -November vocabulary -October vocabulary -September vocabulary -August vocabulary (these 3 are stacked together) -Onomatopoeia and bikkuri adverbs -Opposite pairs -Proverbs -Slang -Terms and phrases for discussing linguistics -Transitive and intransitive pairs -Tricky vocabulary -Words from Chibimarukochan -Words from forum (old one and gaiwa) -Words from conversation group -Words from TV and lets plays As I'm planning on starting to use lang-8 a little more often, I might have to add a deck for lang-8 corrections soon too. I was going to go into more detail about my anki routines and habits, but I'll save it for a later post.

I've just started using Anki (I'm not really fond of SNS/flashcard stuff tbh), and I'm working on putting one of my books on Business Japanese into it (the book is 400+ pages of just vocabulary this is going to take forever). So, my decks atm are: ●ビジネス - Currently containing only words starting with あ ●ツイッター - Random twitter-related vocab
I'll probably add some more later, it'll more than likely end up full of N1 vocabulary/grammar, and stuff from 乙女 games and Harry Potter lol

I need to start using Anki, I feel like it would help me with my vocabulary problem. (I need to waaay catch up on vocab and kanji to get those skills to the same level as my grammar is.)

It's weird, but vocabulary is probably my strongest point, at least compared to the other skills. It's possibly my grammar that's the worst (I'd say listening comprehension, but it's fine so long as the dialogue is at my level). It's not because I don't know and understand all the grammar I should at my stage, but rather that I'm sloppy about applying it, especially when speaking (did you notice that much of the feedback I got on lang-8 was putting back the particles I'd dropped- a bad habit I've learnt from my speaking style ^^). I definitely recommend Anki. It has been a godsend. Although I should say that for some reason, I still often struggle to recall words fast enough when I speak, maybe because I add more words than I should and overload my memory. Just, be warned: it honestly does sap away at your time. I guess it should though. I mean, spending an hour per day studying vocabulary probably isn't a bad thing. I've only just started using anki for kanji. Well, I've had the 'kanji' deck for a few months, but it was just grade 2 stuff. It now contains a lot of words I've added to help me remember the various readings of kanji. Also, my cards are usually English first, and I have to give the Japanese. I'm gradually going through the words that I've more or less mastered, and flipping them over and editing them so that the kanji comes out alone and I have to give the reading. So far, it really seems to have helped my kanji knowledge to explode overnight. I'm not sure if it would have worked so well if I hadn't already known these words though. Maybe...

JembruI've just started using Anki, and it's really great! I'm learning a lot more vocab now, which is my weak point. My strong point is like, making sentences/grammar-y stuff quickly in my head, but my weak point is all that vocabulary. So I'm glad I found out that Anki was free- for some reason I don't know why I thought you had to buy the softwear.

I'm thrilled that you've started to use it! It's kinda sweet that we're discovering one another's favourite study methods. I'm pretty sure you'll find your own ways of getting the most out of anki, but if you want to know some of the little hints and tricks I use with the program, let me know and as ever, I'd be only too glad to share! It's a bit of a military operation when I use anki. lol.

Just a quick update: I added 2 more decks to anki yesterday and when I switched it on this morning, I got a message advising me not to split my cards into so many decks. It says that the memories created won't be as strong if groups of cards are constantly studied together. So I've just spent the last 30 minutes reorganising all my monthly decks and those grouped by category (lets plays, minecraft and so on) into a 'main deck'. Anki suggested using tags instead, to divide them into categories so I've done this. I need to have an idea where or when I learnt a word, as it helps me to remember, so this lets me get the best of both worlds.
I've kept the tricky vocab separate as those cards need more practice, but I might filter them into the main deck every now and then, as they become easier to remember. I also still have the opposite pairs, transitive and intransitive pairs, wago and jukugo pairs and a separate kanji deck, as many of the words (or at least one of the pair) appear in my main deck anyway.
Just thought I'd share in case anyone was planning on copying my 30 different decks! Anki says less is more when it comes to decks. Still, I now have a single deck with 848 cards. That's making my eyes water. Only 147 reviews for that deck today though, so it could be worse. I guess...

I tried Anki maybe a year ago, it's been on my computer for a while now. I've been using Memrise. It's similar to Anki, except you either have to type out the answers or do multiple choice. They also have Mnemonic pictures listed with the items. But when I use it I don't really pay them much attention. I'll try and start using Anki again. I just downloaded the update for it.

It's interesting that you mentioned that. Someone suggested it on the face book page of the conversation group I co-run so I gave memrise a try recently. I like it, but not as much as anki. It seems better for people who want to study from pre-made lists. I started a kanji by grade thing, but the one I've chosen only wants the English meaning. I keep forgetting that and writing (in romaji) the Japanese word sometimes.
I like the way the program looks, and love that you are 'planting seeds' by studying new words, and 'watering your garden' by revising previously learned stuff.
As anki takes up so much of my time, I guess I don't really have time to incorporate memrise into my study too. It's a shame though.

I wonder if anyone knows if it is possible to suspend words for a planned amount of time on anki? What I mean is, as I add new kanji to my notebook, I usually add anything from 3 to 6 compounds of that kanji to anki. I don't want them all to pop up at the same time, otherwise I might get one wrong, but then it jogs my memory and I get the rest of them right. What I've been doing then, is deliberately suspending all but 2 of them. I check my suspended list for leeches every week or so anyway, so when I do this, I can release another 2 compounds.
What I really want to do though, is be able to say, suspend for 2 days, or suspend for 4 days or whatever, so that anki automatically releases the cards for me. Does anyone know if this is possible? The settings on anki aren't exactly user friendly.
Actually, this reminds me. Does anyone use the android version and if so, is it possible to change the time a new day starts? I changed it on my laptop to start a day at 1am, as this is more convenient for me than midnight due to the first few hours being my busiest at work. This seemed to affect ankiweb too, but no matter what I do now, anki on my tablet always restarts at midnight. Changing the time on my tablet is the only way to get around this as far as I can tell.

forum.koohii.com/viewtopic.php?pid=200362 That link might help a little with alternatives to the answer of the first question, although it doesn't really solve it. Hmm, I don't think I can be of much help on this. I use Ankidroid on my phone, but it follows the time set on the desktop one, I think. BTW, did you ever get a LINE account around the time we were still using the old forum? I think I only have Anna and Jade added on there, and it would be great to have the whole staff added (or most of them, since I think Midori's parents said no last time).

I never installed line because I'm wary that my phone hasn't enough memory. It keeps saying memory full when I try to install things, but when I check it has loads. I accidentally deleted Japanese input a while ago and even though I immediately tried to reinstall, it said I didn't have space.. not even the exact space it requires that I'd just deleted! I actually managed to get it back recently, but it took a lot of angry perseverance. Lol when I fiinally get around to taking them up on the free upgrade I'm seemingly entitled to, I'll get line. I'm just lazy.

Ah, you mentioned having a tablet, so I assumed it would be easier to install on that. You don't need to though! I just thought it would be cool to have more staff members on LINE because it's much more convenient than Skype in some ways.

Oh right! Well, I can try, but I won't be able to IM. I never use it to type because it's so slow. Have you ever had that thing on a PC where you type but the letters don't appear right away? Well my tablet is like that. I tap the pad and there is a 2 or 3 second delay before the letter appears. It's infuriating. It's even worse if I try to type Japanese, because a single kana is usually 2 letters, and then I have to select the kanji. It's slow enough on my mobile without the delay.
Still , if you don't need instant responses, I guess it wouldn't hurt. If I have time, I'll do it tomorrow.

That's fine! LINE supports audio/video responses. Oh, and don't worry about instant responses, LINE's pretty much like Skype but the other person doesn't need to be online. (in fact I'm usually surprised when they are and I get a reply quickly. XD) My LINE username is bokusenou.
