Lightning, the really hot and dry weather, some other factors, and some of the other ones were caused by some jerks who thought lighting more fires while the firefighters were already stretched thin would be fun. Here's what the fire warnings for my state look like currently. Blue is advice, yellow is watch and act, and red is emergency. There's quite a lot less yellows and reds than there was yesterday, thankfully. Oh my gosh, I hope the fires go out soon! Stay safe, ok? Yeah, I'm staying inside and limiting my going places not that I go many places anyway, and a lot of roads are closed. A lot more are under control today, thankfully, but they're predicting it's only going to get bad again next week.

The closest thing I get around here are hurricanes. The power goes out, trees fall and crush things, the stoplights don't work, and most of the food places either run out of food, or it goes bad with no refrigeration. I can just imagine how bad fires would be.

I can't find anything talking about food shortages or anything so I'm assuming they're still fine. It's mainly the people living in the Blue Mountains and bushland (and people living near national parks as I just found out) that need to worry, but I'm still a bit freaked out about it. I've heard this is the worst NSW has had in about a decade so yeah.
Good old Australia and its bush fires D: If it wasn't so windy lately everything would be much easier, but the weather seems to hate us right now. Hot, dry, and windy... woo.

Can I post my Japanese language learning brain f.. erm.. おなら in this thread? Like this for example...
I just found an N3 word I didn't know (not trying to imply I know them all,I'm pretty sure I don't. I just mean I usually know those that come up, at least after a few minutes of blank staring ^^). It was 支度. I knew 用意 and 準備 but never came across this word somehow. Not ever. Weird. At least I know the kanji.
(I had spell-check on and still had to edit this for typos. Hahaha)
(and a second time.. I'm tired, I've had a little too much sake.. I can't get my English right.. I think now is a perfect time to go into chat and see if anyone wants to practice Japanese with me. lol)

I read on the news that the fires over there have been put out now. I was so glad to read that! Yeah, a lot more of them are out now. Some that aren't are more under control than what they were which is good. Hopefully they're all gone soon. Here is where I'm getting my info if you're interested.

Hmm, there are a few more yellow ones than I thought there would be, I guess that's why it's better to go straight to the source, rather than rely on sites like CNN.

When I first heard about it I went straight to news sites but they were slow in updating, then the RFS twitter which lead me to their website. Their website is easier for me to figure out where everything is happening, I suck at remembering which towns are where lol There's a lot less yellow than the past couple of days though which is better. Now if only they'd all go away lol

I wouldn't have been amazed by not knowing an N3 word, I just thought I knew most at N4. I typoed and didn't notice my mistake. lol

This has been a really good week for me. Today, I managed to get my hands on the rest of the Minna no Nihongo series, including all the materials for the first and second set. I am currently working on getting the optional listening CD's. The only thing I can't find are the listening workbook CD's, which I had somewhere at my parents house. No telling where they are now. On Monday, we heard the baby's heartbeat for the first time! It was very exciting. We have an appointment on the 19th of next month for my next prenatal, and we'll hear the heartbeat again at that time. Only 7 more weeks till we get our ultrasound.

Good old Australia and its bush fires D: Australia seems like a scary place. I saw the last thing on this, and it made me think of you talking about all the fires.

I'm putting this here, because I don't want to start a new thread for it. Maybe it is related to my 'benkyou burnout', but I'd rather let that thread sink to the bottom where it can be forgotten about, rather than draw any further attention to it.
So, today, I had a massive realisation. I hate being asked 'why are you studying Japanese?', because I just have no answer. I stare back and wonder, 'yeah, exactly why am I doing this to myself?' I look at others, they have goals.. they want to be able to read novels in Japanese, they dream of living in Japan, they are aiming towards the JLPT, have ambitions of making it as a translator... yet, I like my current job, moving back to Japan would be the end of JP and I, all but one person I know who speaks Japanese, also knows English, so having friends isn't a good enough reason. I'm not an anime fan, rarely play videogames (even my favourite game, minecraft.. I mostly just watch lets plays and really suck as a player.. can't even use the keyboard so play with a PS controller that makes my movements slow and clumsy).
Then I wonder.. is it their goals, their reason to learn, that makes everyone else so much better at Japanese than me? Have I honestly, any reason to be spending my free time on this aimless, pointless hobby? Not that quitting is even an option, because as soon as I quit, then the last 2.3 years has been a complete waste of time. All I did was get older, see my friends less, let other hobbies slide. For what? To quit now?
This is nothing those of you who know me well, haven't heard before. Today is different though.
Today, I realised that I DO have a reason to want to learn Japanese. I just want one thing I can be proud of myself for. I've always been average at everything. I passed through education on C grades, graduated with a 2:1 (just), do a pretty menial job, have a small and insignificant rented home, filled with missmached furniture. I'm unattractive. Nothing I do seems to improve that. I fractured my chin bone in a skateboarding accident at 16 leaving my face wonky, then took a golfball to the eye at 25, that has left a scar over which my eyebrow won't grow. Although I was unattractive even before these things. I'm short, I'm average. I just want to have one thing, one little thing that I can say, 'yeah, but look.. I have this amazing skill'.
Which, now that I've realised it, pretty much explains everything about how I am around Japanese. I get depressed when I don't seem to get any better while everyone else rockets ahead with (to my mind) much less effort. Because it seems that even that one little thing I'm striving for, putting my heart and soul into is still far, far from my grasp. This just reinforces my feelings of being a failure.
I guess, this is also why I refuse to call myself an advanced student. In some ares, I'm definitely not advanced, like reading and writing, Yet in some areas, maybe the level at which I'm studying is more towards the advanced end than intermediate. However, it is safer, more comforting, to be pretty good for an intermediate student, than face the possibility that I'm a pretty lousy advanced student.
Well, knowing why I'm doing this, and thus why I feel the way I do, puts me in a good position to get over this once and for all, and start being proud of myself for making it this far. Lets face it, so long as I don't quit now, even if it takes me another 4-6 years, I WILL get there. I already know and understand way more Japanese than I did a year ago, and a year ago, I knew far more than I did a year before that (even if it doesn't feel that way some days), so I've proven to myself that I can and do improve. It's just much more slowly than most people.
