At last Erin realised what it was and gulped. "Kiba...!"
Next line:

Jembru! Glad to see you back here! In the story, we're in the cave where they raise touda, and they've just learned that (all?) the kiba-ranked touda have died. Erin was going to go to her mother, but someone grabbed her shoulder. When she looked up, her grandfather was there.

I've done a few sentences are they're all short and so quite easy.
He gazed at Erin's mother with a drawn expression on his face.
Are they dead?"
On hearing his voice, she nodded.
"All five of them?"
Next line:

Her mother nodded again. Before Erin knew it the strange whistle sound had ceased.
Next Line:

In the silence was the sound of approaching footfalls and at last three of the Touda folk entered the Rock Chamber.
"...The Kiba in the next chamber are dead too!"
Next lines:

The Touda folk were greatly disturbed. (Or maybe "The Touda folk let out a cry."? "This news caused a great disturbance among the Touda folk."? I feel like 'disturbed' is a good word but I'm not sure it conveys the idea of there being noise as well. Maybe commotion is a better word? A ripple of unease?)
Erin's grandfather had been resting his hands on her shoulders and now his grip turned painfully tight. (This sentence was horrible.)
"What about the other Touda?"
Next line: 「〈

Next Line:

Her grandfather spoke sternly as he looked round at the Touda folk,
"All of you, go to your Rock Chambers. If the Touda agitated and swimming around they'll graze their hides on the rocks. We mustn't lose any more!"
Next line:

The Touda folk all nodded at once and, after watching them rush out of the Rock Chamber, Erin's grandfather walked towards the Pond.
Next lines: 「……

"Why are they like this?" Erin's mother didn't look at her father-in-law, instead answering while lifting up one of the scales from the floating bodies.
めくるようにして sounded like it meant she "turned it over" to me, instead of the other meaning , "to tear off", although "to tear off" might make more sense here...Hmm...
Next Line:
EDIT: fixed sentence.

I looked up the definition of めくる to investigate. So I guess you could translate it as the mother lifting up a scale/the scales to check underneath?
Her mother nodded again. At some point the strange whistling sound had stopped.

chocopie Ah, good point! "They are covered in washu (glowing insects), so could they have choked on them?" "No. There are none on their gills. The washu must have come after they died."

"Was the enriched water (water infused with medicinal herbs given only to the Kiba) lacking?" Erin's mother shook her head silently.
Next line:

"To let all the Kiba die...You know that's a grave crime! When the inspector comes, you will be questioned and tried for it."

Erin's mother turned her head slowly and looked up at Erin's grandfather. Then she spoke softly in a whisper, "I am prepared for that."
The whole "Erin's mother" and "Erin's grandfather" thing is getting a bit annoying. If only they had names!
Next lines:
