One of my main reasons for learning Japanese, is that Japan makes games. I'm sure there are many good games that may never be translated into English. I think the first Japanese game I played was Jet set radio on the dreamcast. I managed to get quite far in that game, until reaching a section that wanted me to do a particular thing to get passed it. But the game was in Japanese and I couldn't understand it, so never did. That game is now in English and I have it on steam. I've been playing games since I was maybe 3 years old, before I could read anything. I used to skip instructions, skip cutscenes and read nothing of it. and now I can read it all in the blink of an eye. So I will share a game I just found, with my highscore(that I challenge you to beat). 旗あげ番長
The screen went white for me a few times, wait a little while and a button should appear. 無料ゲーム キッズ@nifty アクションパーティゲーム

If you play minecraft, this a server that teaches Japanese. linkThat's awesome! I tried to start something kinda like that. My partner set up a server just for members of this forum, but no one wanted to join in in the end, so it just never happened (well, JP and I played about in Japanese a few times waiting for people to join the server, but that's all). If we ever try again to get the group going, I really like their idea of Japanese by day and English (or Japanese) by night. Especially for people like me who fatigue speaking Japanese too long, this is a great idea. It would stop us from slipping into English only too, which I found happened when I tried to skype call with a fellow learner. (why are they using 'torchi' for torch? Is this an alternative word? It's always been 'taimatsu' in every lets play or lets build I've ever seen.) Also, I'm currently playing pokemon in Japanese. I'm not very good at finding time to play video games though, so it's a slow process ^^

torchi is their romaji version of トーチ, some of the signs use romaji(the lower levels I think) then the later ones are in kana or kanji.
The only issues I'm having are being able to type in Japanese ingame and some of the signs are hard to read.
I haven't played minecraft in ages and I never used mods or anything when I did play.

No no, that was just my romaji because I was too lazy to switch to Japanese input. I was watching their play through earlier. Later, they started using the correct word though. The guy hosting used 'numa' for swamp, and didn't notice when one of the Japanese players corrected him to the proper term the game uses 'shitchi'. He then went on to tell everyone that swamp is numa.. which it is... just not in minecraft ^^
Sorry, my Japanese might be crap, but I know my minecraft vocab ^^
btw, fancy some Japanese chat? I'm heading into the chatroom now if you fancy it. My Japanese is basic, but comprehensible.
... I forgot to say. I never use the text chat when I play minecraft in any language. It's too much for me to type and concentrate on the screen at the same time. I just use voice chat, it's so much easier!

If you're still on in a little while I will, I'm currently taking some tests on the minecraft server to get my rank up, I'm at rank 1 now . The guy running it is nice.

There are tests? You mean in-game? It sounds so cool. I should really join up too. Yeah, I'll be around a while. I'm wide awake.

w..w..what??? That's my avatar? How did it do that? I just signed up and there's my minecraft skin's face on my profile. What is this sorcery?
Maan, I wish I knew how to set up the second PC so I could play tonight. I'm seriously in the mood for some mining and crafting right now. I need JP to set me up like the big babby I am though. >.< I'm so excited that you found this site. I'm not sure you were around on the old forum, so you might now know just how much and for how long I've been desperate to start doing this!

I took the test on the teamspeak channel. He'd ask me questions while walking through the level in minecraft. The last test was him being a shopkeeper, I'm at rank 2 now.

Hey Demonhead: I'm going to try to get on the game on Sunday. I'm also not exactly sure where I should be looking for these level up tests?? Is this like.. you need to reach a particular level before they let you join in? I'm not sure how much time I have to devote to something like that. Maybe you'd be willing to talk me through what I should be doing on chat some time?
In the meantime, if you (or anyone) wants to join my partner and I in our own server for some practice on Sunday night, please let me know. If you don't have me on Skype, send me a PM and I'll add you.
Whoever joins, as it will be your first time playing Minecraft in Japanese, lets start the session in English and gradually add as as much or as little Japanese as you're comfortable with as we go along. I'm willing to do a little bit of a walk about where we just name things together so you can get used to the vocabulary and we can look up things neither of us know yet. Then you can add in full sentences whenever you like. If I don't understand you, I'll say and you can give me the English and maybe quickly break down the grammar. I think it would be nice to have a few cosy warm-up sessions before joining a group of established players with proficient Japanese.
Don't forget to check out the vocab list I posted in the minecraft thread. They're all tried and tested vocabulary that I promise came from the Japanese version game itself (in which case I MAY potentially have given the wrong kanji reading) or from lets plays by native speakers, so I think you can trust my list.

If you go on their server and type /warp jp1 it should take you to the first level. It's a building with signs teaching Japanese. When you're ready to be tested, if there's a mod online they'll come and test you on the stuff in the building. I think they let anyone join in the events. The next one is on Saturday at 1pm. link
Other than being tested, I haven't really interacted with anyone on the server, I've mostly been wandering around the server looking at the signs. They seem like relaxed, friendly people. I think the tests are more for testing yourself than about meeting a requirement to participate.

Ah I see, thanks for explaining. I was looking on the homepage (I'm such a scrub). That'll give me something to do on Sunday then. I'll pop in and see what's going on. Does it matter that I can't type in Japanese on Minecraft? I'm just not sure how they will be able to interact with me without skype, or do you just swap skype details when they meet you?
I don't think I'll be able to make it on Saturday as I have a nightshift that night so will probably be sleeping. Will you try to join in with them? I'll definitely be online on Sunday evening though, so my offer still stands if you want to join me. Maybe we can just hang out in their server and see who comes along?

I just tried, it was fine for the first half hour or so(before they started). Then I started disconnecting from the server continuously and falling through the map, when I could move around, none of them were moving. So I left. 可哀相...
I don't think I'll have time to go on your server tomorrow + I don't have skype installed. You could send me the address if you want, and if I have time I might come in.

Oh;? So how do you communicate with them in the game? Can you just play and not interact verbally with them? Or is it through some kind of special server that let's everyone hear one another? Sorry to ask so many questions, but I really want to be able to speak verbally while playing. I can't even type in codes while I play.. JP has to do that for me.
Can you even input Japanese in minecraft? I noticed some of the Japanese youtubers I follow, type in romaji to one another when they team up in PVP and so on, but as they usually skype, I'm not sure if this is a universal thing.
Hmm.. I've only tested our own server over short distances, so I've always worried about staying connected with people from far away. If I can afford to, I'm willing to throw a bit money at this if it's any good through. I was planning on taking online lessons in the new year which would have been a few hundred pounds per bundle. It was only for the speaking practice (I can get amazing correction through lang-8, and advice from my Japanese friends and you guys). So if I can get speaking practice via this minecraft thing, I might be better off spending my money on upgrading my PC. I'm so sorry it didn't work out this time. I wonder if the server was just too busy? I've only just woken up, and JP is visiting his sick gran (I can't manage minecraft without him), so I couldn't have gotten on myself. This will likely be a common problem, although maybe I'll get so hooked that I start skipping sleep on work days... :S
