マインクラフトをやってみよう!!
このトッピをこのフォーラムで始めるのはめんどくさくて先伸ばしにしたけど、元のフォーラムで私の一番気に入ったトッピなので、ようやく始めているところだ。*吐息* (<-この読書挑戦トッピックでつい最近習った言葉をただ使いたくなっちゃったわよ!^^) Due to it being a pain to do, I've been putting off starting this topic on this forum, but as it was my favourite topic on the original forum, I'm finally pulling my finger out. *sigh* (<- I just wanted to use this word that I recently learnt in the reading challenge thread! ^^) まあ、早速ね。。。 Well, here it goes... 外のフォーラムでは色んなマインクラフトトッピックがあちこちあったけど、今回全部はこの一つのトッピックにすると思う。 The old forum had various minecraft threads dotted about, but this time, I think I'll make it all one thread. I think I'll post it all as separate panels, so I can keep coming back and adding to it, rather than do it all at once. Feel free to post anything minecraft related here however.

My partner, JP and I, have a public server that we can use to host minecraft games. The idea is that we'll play together and try to use as much Japanese as possible. This is made easier by a handy vocabulary list that yours truly put together for you guys. I add to the list every now and then, as I play and come across more things that I couldn't previously say, so it is gradually growing. It is a free server, so I can only host 4 people at a time (and myself), but I am not expecting that many at the moment and definitely not all at the same time. If more want to join, I will look into expanding the server when we know better. The only problem is that I've never tested it over huge distances like UK<->US<->Aus So it may crash. If so, we'll try to get a better Internet connection that can handle it, as we'd love to start doing adventure or vs maps with you guys! I will use my laptop to skype, to take the pressure of the main PC, so while I might keep going offline on skype (I don't know why it does this) the server should be unaffected and I'll be able to text to you in-game (in romaji or English I guess?), to explain that I'm restarting my laptop! So, if you are in, you will need... -> The most up to date version of minecraft. -> To download hamachi from secure.logmein.com/products/hamachi/download.aspx, if you don't already have it (I recommend you choose 'un-managed') This step doesn't seem to be necessary, but some people have trouble connecting without it for some reason. -> Add me on skype if you haven't already done so -> PM me so I can give you the network id so you can join the server. -> Spend days, weeks, months, trying to find a time when I am available to host!

I thought that as some of us forum members are planning to play minecraft together, it would be a good idea to memorise some minecraft related words beforehand. For that reason, I have compiled a handy vocabulary list. I learnt these words from minecraft wiki, youtube videos and directly from the game itself. I'm sure there'll be loads of words here that you already know, but as the participants have such varied levels of Japanese, I thought a list like this might be necessary so we can discuss the game while we play. So that everyone can understand, I've used English in the explanations. Please feel free to add your own words to this list.
Minecraft: マインクラフト
Mobs: The Japanese version of the game doesn't use the word 'mobbu', although I think that's a damned shame!
Neutral mobs 生物 せいぶつ Sheep 羊 ひつじ pig ブタ ぶた chicken 鶏 にわとり, I've also heard players say 雌鳥 めんどり, which is 'hen', or チキン although I only heard this used for the meat. ocelot ヤマネコ やまねこ wolf オオカミ おおかみ cow 牛 うし horse 馬 うま donky ロバ ろば octopus タコ, but officially listed as a squid イカ villager 村人 むらびと bat コウモリ
Hostile mobs モンスター Enderman officially listed as エンダーマン but often affectionately referred to as エンダーさん. I kinda like Enderman, so I use the latter. Zombie ゾンビ Skeleton スケルトン They are always called sukeruton and not gaikotsu, as I called them, which is the medical expression. Spider again, while the Japanese word for spider is クモ, minecraft uses スパイダ for this mob, unless you collect their eyes, then クモの目 is used. Creeper クリーパー
I've left out the nether mobs, or those which spawn in specific areas, because we can add those later, and most are just katakana anyway.
Items 道具 どうぐ and アイテム Inventory インベントリ (this is the items you can carry on you, but when you die, you lose them and have to return to the site of your death to pick them up again. It's better to offload precious items into chests as soon as you are able.) Item slot アイテムスロット (this applies to both your inventory and to the chests) Pickaxe つるはし Sword 剣 けん Shovel シャベル Axe 斧 おの You may also hear アックス Bucket バケツ Sticks 棒 ぼう Torches 松明 たいまつ This is the official name, but just as English players sometimes call them candles by accident, you may also hear people say ろうそく. Fishing rod 釣竿 つりざお Bow and arrows 弓矢 ゆみや Armor 防具 ぼうぐ This is actually 'protective clothing'. There are other more direct translations such as 武具, but this is what the game uses. Players I've watched on youtube, frequently use アーマー however. Helmet ヘルメット Chestplate チェストプレート Leggings レギンス Boots ブーツ Crafting table The game lists this as 作業代 さぎょうだい but one guy I watched needed to make a new pickaxe and said he needed his クラフトボックス 'craft box', I've only heard this one use of the word、and he actually corrected himself moments later, so I don't think this is a real word. However, it's cute, so I use it! Furnace かまど This has a kanji,that looks like a scorpion, but it is usually written in kana. Even so, I think of it as 火窓 'fire window', because it helps me to remember. Oh and for the kanji nazis, yeah, I do know that compound would actually be read 'kasou', or 'himado', it's just a nmemonic. Chest チェスト
Substances (blocks : ブロック) I just guessed when I was making my videos about minecraft, but seemingly, this really is the word they use for the fabrics the world is made from. I love lucky guesses.
Gravel 砂利 じゃり Stone 石 いし Cobblestone 丸石 まるいし Moss stone 苔石 こけいし Dirt 土 つち Sand 砂 すな Sandstone 砂岩 さがん Grass 草 くさ Obsidian 黒曜石 こくようせき Ice 氷 こおり Snow 雪 ゆき Lava 溶岩 ようがん Wood (as a building material) 木材 もくざい Brick レンガ Wool 羊毛 ようもう or for saying what something is made from, you can also use ウル.
Ores 鉱石 こうせき Diamond ore ダイヤモンド鉱石 (Diamond on it's own is usually shortened to ダイア in Japanese) Iron ore 鉄鉱石 てっこうせき (note: Most of the ore substances can be used alone without 鉱石 when you aren't referring to it in it's raw form, however, there is a sound change when the kanji for iron is combined with 鉱石. On it's own 鉄 is read 'てつ'. Or you can also read it くろがね, literally, 'dark metal', although JP thinks this word is more common when describing what something is made from, such as an iron pot. So you might want to use this word to describe your sword and suchlike, while sticking to てつ while mining. Gold ore 金鉱石 きんこうせき Redstone ore レッドストーン鉱石 Lapis lazuli ore ラピスラズリ鉱石 Emerald ore: エメラルド鉱石 Coal 石炭 せきたん
Biomes バイオーム I haven't added the new biomes from the bigger biomes update. I can though, if that's what people want. Tundra ツンドラ Also called 氷原 ひょうげん (frozen planes) Taiga タイガ Also called 針葉樹林 しんようじゅりん (coniferous forest) Forest 森林 しんりん Ocean 海洋 かいよう Rainforest 熱帯雨林 ねったいうりん Grasslands/plains 草原 そうげん Extreme hills (mountains) 山額 さんがく Desert 砂漠 さばく Mushroom island キノコ群生島 キノコぐんせいしま Swampland 湿地 しっち Nether ネーザー The end ジ.エンド Water fall 滝 たき
Generated Structures 構造物 こうぞうぶつ Mine shaft 廃坑 はいこう Stronghold 要塞 ようさい Desert temple 砂漠の寺院 さばくのじいん Jungle temple ジャングルの寺院 ジャングルのじいん Dungeon Japanese Minecraft actually calls this モンスターハウス, I guess because of the spawner you always find in there. I also say ダンジョン, but I've never seen a player find one, so I don't know if the Japanese ever use this word. Witches hut ウイッチの小屋 ウイッチのこや Ravine 地下渓谷 ちかけいこく Ruin, relic 遺跡 いせき
Verbs 動詞 Just a little collection of verbs you frequently say while playing the game;
To be introduced 伝えられる つたえられる Unable to move, frozen 動けない おごけない To hit 殴る なぐる To arrange or line up 並べる ならべる To drown 溺れる おぼれる To sink, to set 沈む しずむ To mine, to dig, to extract 掘る ほる To fall in, to get stuck in はまる To fall into 落ち込む おちこむ To fall 転ぶ ころぶ To take out (ie, from a chest or furnace) 取り出す とりだす To collect together all the items you need to make something 揃える そろえる To gather 集める あつめる To go and get 取りに行ってくる とりにいってくる To pick up 拾う ひろう To spawn スポーンする To grow back (such as trees) 復活する To attack 攻撃する こうげきする To shoot 射る いる (Ichidan)
Minecraft-specific slang and expressions マインクラフトの隠語 I thought I had better add some of the slang expressions natives use when they play minecraft. Some are only used in minecraft and some can be found in other game contexts. I'm discovering new one's all the time, so I'll keep coming back and adding. If anyone has anything to add, please post in the thread and I'll edit this again with a reference to who gave us the word. じゃ、早速。。。
マイクラ: This is the abbreviation the Japanese use for 'minecraft' 前川ビュタ (まえがわびゅた): This refers to the random floating blocks that occur naturally when the world forms. 焼石 (やきいし): In english, we say, 'smooth stone' but in Japanese they say 'cooked stone' (this ONLY applies to minecraft). When you collect stone, which spawns in a smooth state naturally, it becomes cobblestone. If you want it to return to it's smooth form, you have to cook it in the furnace. So 'yakiishi' is smooth stone you have made and can now build with). Naturally spawned smooth stone, is simply 'ishi' in Japanese. -木取る: Not sure if this counts or not, but this compound verb appears a lot in Minecraft. I (think) I also hear it, if I'm catching it right, as a suru verb in the form of 木取り. The reason I include this as slang, is that the guy I like with the red socks, was collecting wood in the murabito videos and couldn't remember the word for 'collecting wood', which made me wonder if he was a native (he is, I've since heard him try to read English!^^). If he had simply forgotten the proper jargon for this, then that situation made perfect sense. So.. 木取る makes my list! You want the English don't you? You're gonna make me write it aren't you? This is the Japanese equivalent of that common minecraft expression that always gets a giggle... 'getting wood'.. *sigh* 残ったアイテム (のこったアイテム): This isn't exactly slang, but it is the stuff left behind when you die, that you need to go back for, or ask a friend to pick up. As it's sort of unique to the game, I thought it was worth mentioning. 抜けた地面: I waited ages to find out what the Japanese say when there is a world hole. I’m still not 100% on this, but I finally came across a reference to one in a lets play. He didn't give it a proper name, but referred to it as '地面が抜けるバグ’ (じめんがぬけるばぐ). So that's the closest I have to a name for it. That's all for now, but like I say, I'll keep adding to this. Incidentally, if anyone would like me to compose a similar list for pokemon, especially now the game can be played in Japanese anywhere, let me know and I'd be happy to do so!

You know, the thread caught my eye, and I didn't read the whole thing, but as soon as saw hamachi, it was my instinct to offer any help with forwarding a port. So yeah..

What says octopus? The game? My version definitely has them listed as squids both in English and Japanese, or it did last I checked. It may have changed with the latest update or something. They definitely look more like octopuses. I listed both words because you come across both during lets plays (like the chicken/hen/duck thing ^^). The list was originally taken from an anki deck of mine that I made to help me follow lets plays more easily, so some words are listed with their official name, and also what I've heard native speakers say on youtube, even if it's incorrect.

I got the impression of squid when I saw them the first time I played, actually... They scared me... I can't play my favorite games in japanese anyway.

Mincraft is one of the easier games to play in Japanese. It's not like pokemon where it's heavy on dialogue. So long as you already know the game, so know what things are, you can set the language to Japanese with very little trouble. Even the codes for updating your game are the same. The modes themselves have the same names, only katakana-rised (^^) . I'm on my phone so can only use romaji, but 'your game mode has been updated' is ゲームモードは更新された 'ge-mu mo-do wa koushin sareta'. So if you try to change the mode and the message doesn't start with ゲームモード, you know something went wrong even if you can't read the whole sentence. The only thing you would miss, is the little messages that pop up when you die. There are too many for me to try to write them all down, although maybe I'll start a collection next time I play (I die often enough to get a good set in one sitting, lol).
Of course, if you're talking about chatting over skype while you play with friends, then not knowing much Japanese could be a problem, but that was why I shared my vocabulary list. So long as you have a good grasp of beginners language (N5 would be enough) and learn the minecraft-specific vocabulary, you can communicate quite a lot with few words. To give an example in English; -> what now? -> nether? -> okay -> do you have obsidian? -> no -> shall we mine? -> okay, lets go!
That can go on for a while before anyone needs to try a longer sentence and no one would mind if you had to switch to English to tell us you died and can someone please pick up the stuff you dropped, if you can't say it. I tend not to use very long or complex sentences when I play in Japanese, often resorting to single words. I make loads of mistakes too. I have some sound bites somewhere of me playing minecraft in Japanese, and I'm not sure there's a single one where I don't get at least a vowel wrong somewhere. It's just a bit of fun and practice, so there's no need to get hung up about mistakes.
I never thought to do this, but I could include the menu screen words too if that would help? If you play often, you probably instinctively know which button is which though.

最近、滅多に建てなかったけど、マインクラフトでの自信作をシェアしよう!これは、元フォーラムからコピペされた、最初本格的な作品だよ! I haven't built much lately, but lets share our favourite builds! This is my first proper build, copied and pasted from the old forum. 屋根の木階段を全部ネーザーレンガの階段に変わろう思うけど、変更を加えるまえに全部作り上げたいんだ。。 I'm probably going to change the wooden steps on the roof so it's all nether brick, but I want to finish building everything else first, before I come back and start tweaking things. 馬の子屋の中。。 Inside the stables 馬機は門で分かってて前のドアは開けないので、馬は裏のドアに入らせなきゃならない。開けられるために基本的な戸を使った。いつか本当な馬の子屋戸は伝えられたらいいね! The stalls are separated by gates and I have to walk all the horses in through the back doors, because of course, the front doors don't actually open. I've had to use regular doors at the back so they'll open and close. Maybe we'll get stable doors in minecraft one day! この写真を撮って以来ちょっと変わったけど、一階 It has changed quite a bit since taking these pictures, but, ground floor: 二階だ。。 first floor.. アリーナーの以内; Inside the riding arena; じゃ、これは全部よ!子供時代からずっとこういう家とたくさん馬が欲しいんだよ!^^ Well, that's it! Ever since I was a kid I've wanted a house like this and loads of horses!^^

So demonhead posted a link in another thread (thank you!!), to a group for playing minecraft and practicing Japanese. I'm still keen on doing the same kind of thing ourselves, but maybe those of us who are interested, could just join there and play together through their server for a while? www.kotobaminers.org/Their level of Japanese is a lot better than mine, so maybe it would be better for us to play with them. I'm not sure how much conversation you'd get from me to be honest ^^. If you watch the video on their homepage, you should see what I've been saying for ages: that you can actually play using pretty short (or even one word) sentences, and grammar isn't really that big a deal. If watching this makes anyone want to try again to start a gaiwa-only group, do let me know and I'll try again to get it off the ground!

Huge thanks for the session tonight Anna! We've finally spoken to one another in Japanese! That was so much fun. Not bad for our first session. I mean, 3 diamonds AND a completed nether portal in just our first few hours? Not bad at all. ^^ I've waited so long to do this. In fact, I was so excited that I made a short lang-8 post about it while I was waiting for you to join us. I'm really looking forward to the next session!

We need to play more.. every night.. I'll throw a sickie or something (just kidding, I need the cash too much). The guys from kotoba miners are trying to persuade me to play in their 'no English' server!!! I wouldn't last a minute in there. Maybe in the New Year! I was thinking actually.. You know how JP put that diamond in the frame? How about each time we play, we pick maybe 4-6 items, frame them and place signs under them with the Japanese name on? Then you can glance them whenever you pass? It has to be in romaji, but it's not like we need to read kanji in-game anyway. I also thought of labeling the chests as different categories at some point down the line. Another thing we could try, is to plan an activity before we meet up. That way you don't have to learn an impossible amount of words in one go. I think the next thing we need to do is to maybe find a better place to mine, such as an exposed ravine or something and start making armour. In which case, I think a good starting place vocab-wise, could be (I know you learnt some of these already): My language bar is refusing to appear right now so please excuse the romaji (I hate this laptop so much). tsuruhashi pickaxe tetsu/tekkouseki iron/iron ore sekitan coal kamado furnace sagyoudai crafting table ken sword bougu armour (herumeto helmet, chestopureto chest plate: kutsu boots: reginzu pants (literally leggings, for some reason, maybe it's waseieigo, or maybe I never noticed they're called leggings in the English version). And in case we get lucky again, 'daia' diamond. You can learn yougan if you want, but for now I like the idea of cheating and calling it 'maguma-'. yougan is the official name in-game and on the Japanese wiki (minecraft wiki is actually a good way to look up vocab actually, so have a link: www26.atwiki.jp/minecraft/If you really want, I guess you could also learn some of the biome names, especially in case you get lost, or find something and need to tell us where to head towards, but that kind of thing can just be said in English. I think the only one I said in Japanese last night was 'sabaku' (desert), when JP sent me off looking for sand (suna) and I got lost ^^. Oh and finally, kotoba miners have a great rule on their bi-lingual server 'Japanese only by day, anything goes at night'. I like that, because for 20 minutes at a time, you're forced to try to use Japanese, but then when you're being hounded by mobs, or down a mine (so don't know the time of day), you can switch to English when you're panicking or need to relay information as quickly as possible. We could maybe try that, if I can get JP to stick to Japanese (which isn't easy.. he understands a lot, as you may have noticed, but he replies in English ^^). EDIT: Just added some more words to the vocab list. I still haven't gotten round to adding the names of plants. I will do though. I also realised while I was going over the list, that I never learnt the names of the generated structures. Just totally forgot to add those to anki. Ah well, it looks like I have some studying to do. Oh but look at them, they're all horribly difficult. ;>,<;
