I'm reviving this topic from the old forum on behalf of my partner. He has become addicted, and I mean completely addicted to the point that he could eat this and only this forever, to kombini onigiri. For those who don't know this, it's the onigiri wrapped in film that are sold in convenience stores in Japan. They are wrapped in such a way as to keep the nori separate from the rice until you open it. There is a bento store in Town that sells all kinds of Japanese convenience food and JP has been known to travel to Newcastle after work, to pick up some sushi and onigiri on his way home (he works about 20 minutes by foot from home, and yet Newcastle is a 30 minute bus journey!). So bad is his obsession, that we now have a giant bag of sushi rice and I have perfected my technique to recreate the taste of nudo onigiri almost perfectly! Miyo advised us to invest in a rice cooker for making sumeshi and we are seriously considering getting one. Our kitchen is tiny, but I guess it can go where the toaster is. I mean, who needs a toaster when you can eat sushi day and night? ^^
So, does anyone else have a favourite Japanese food? I like onigiri wrapped in nori too (or 'jelly donuts as we mockingly call them based on the American dub of Pokemon that decided Japanese food was just too much for the minds of young impressionable American children to handle, so changed onigiri to 'jelly donut'), but my absolute favourite Japanese food has to be nattou. Or.. nattou onigiri I guess ^^

Great idea Jemma! Hmm, for me it's probably either mitarashi dango or yakitori. If "non-japanese food I first had while in Japan" counts, then gyouza. XD

I don't get the opportunity to eat Japanese food that often but I'd like to! I've been learning Japanese since the beginning of the summer and there's a chance I'll be doing an exchange program to Japan for my grade 12 year(I'm currently in grade 10). I'll get to have lots of Japanese food then if I get to go!

I love yakisoba, okinawa brown sugar rolls, teriyaki chicken donburi, sanshokudon (or three-color don in translation), chicken curry, tamago sushi, inari (fried tofu with rice and seaweed inside-don't eat too many!). I really like to eat Japanese food, and at my work, I get to try some of it since I live with Japanese students during the year (LittleGaiJin aka Anna can tell you that-she worked with me! XD ).
I've also found I like some of their "dry products" that you can add water to, like chicken ramen (different brand), a yummy rice topping with dried ume and seaweed flakes, "marshmallow jellies" as I like to call a treat- a marshmallow with a gel or jelly inside. Pocky (yes!!), of the strawberry, chocolate, and cheesecake variety. Konpeito, a literal sugar candy. Nyumen, some types of miso.
I can "sorta" make onigiri, I just don't know it if it the "right way" to make onigiri...

Konbini onigiri are legit like the best things ever. Also, let's see, okonomiyaki! And, hmmm, meron pan of course, yakisoba (I've had such a craving for really really good yakisoba lately), inari (totes oishii). Oh! And curry bread!
On to the desserts: definitely kakigori, and cake, I mean, cake is good everywhere, but especially Japanese cakes. Also purin, especially konbini purin.
(I really love konbini food)

You're not alone in the love of konbini food♥ Whenever I couldn't be bothered cooking I always bought konbini food lol
Okay, favourite Japanese food... okonomiyaki, takoyaki, taiyaki, meron pan, yakisoba, daigakuimo, onigiri, manju, and a whole heap more, but I can't remember everything(;´▽`A``

Raamen is the only thing I've had because of my lack of cooking skills, but I've had sushi, and I like raamen better.

naitorii RAMEN IS THE BEST!! I'm sorry that was very enthusiastic, but I can seriously live off of that stuff. Also, Anpan. If you don't know what anpan is it's a sweet dessert-like bread with sweet red bean paste in the middle. <3 To DIE for. Hmm, what else... Daifuku (if you don't know what it is look it up, it's another dessert thing) and green tea ice cream. and kakigoori. Yes, lately I have been obsessed with Japanese desserts. Udon is good too, and yakisoba... And yakisoba pan... And those dried pieces of nori that are delicious even plain. And everyone is going to go "oh my god you're crazy" but I actually am quite fond of natto. Yep. I said it.

I can "sorta" make onigiri, I just don't know it if it the "right way" to make onigiri... How are you making it? I think we've perfected the technique, as they taste just like the ones we buy, and we are making them as authentically as possible (wrapped, konbini style, although I've made others, including smaller Hello Kitty shaped ones I make using a mold JP bought me). My closest Japanese friend here in the UK, also happens to work for my favourite bentou chain (although she did admit to me that they use a machine, lol), so I like to believe I have as close to an 'expert' on hand as I could get. LOL. Jade: I've spoken to a lot of people who've lived in Japan, via the offline group and the agreement is unanimous: konbini onigiri are the aces!! Last Sunday, JP and I ate 5 each.. honestly! And 5 of us from the group made a pilgrimage to the store that sells them, to buy armfuls of the stuff. nomonom-nom @midori: I love green tea, but I'm never keen on things flavoured with it. I'm very slowly making my way though some green tea boiled sweets that were intended part of a certain give-a-way recently, and I'm not impressed. My favourite Ice cream I had in Japan was gomaaisu. I always ordered that. It's a bit of a weird colour (grey, or greyish green) but very yummy.

I make onigiri the way my counselor at Japanese camp taught me- I use saran wrap so that the rice doesn't stick to my hands, and I put the rice on the saran wrap, then the fillings on top of that and then mold it into that triangle shape with my hands using the saran wrap so it doesn't stick. Then I take the finished rice ball out of the saran wrap and put on the nori and sometimes soy sauce (although I don't usually actually use soy sauce anymore since most Japanese people don't really use it that much)

I'm assuming 'saran wrap' is what cling film is called over the pond?

LOL. Well, I boil the rice like normal (but I use the white rice, since I didn't know until much more recently where I could find Japanese rice in my town), then I make a mix of white vinegar (in place of sushi vinegar?), sugar, and salt. It always comes out a little bit salty, but the mixture helps keep that pesky white rice together. I think it tastes good, but I don't think that it is very Japanese, per se.
