Back in January, 2013, a forum was created to become a fun, and friendly place to practice Japanese among other Japanese learners. However, after running this website for almost 9 months, we realized that the site had the potential for something so much greater! We spent a month working non-stop on a new, fully functional website to support our ideas and ambitions to become a powerful resource for Japanese learners all over the world! We are now a friendly community, with a talented team of staff members dedicated to providing the perfect online community for Japanese learners!
What does "Gaiwa" mean?
In our original forum site, we gave the members the opportunity to pick the name (and logo) of our new website before launching it to the public on October 6th, 2013. The winning name suggestion was "Gaiwa," which is shorthand for Gaijin no Kaiwa (外人の会話) or simply, foreigner's conversation.
Why should I join Gaiwa?
Good question!
It can be extremely difficult to learn a new language on your own. Especially when you don't have a teacher to guide you, or classmates to practice with. And more often than not―those who are learning a new language, on their own, spend more money than they really have to. Japanese is such a popular language, and there are resources all over the internet that can be available to you for free (Gaiwa included). There is no reason for you to spend more than $50 in order to learn Japanese.
Half the fun in learning a new language is making friends, and learning about the rich culture that is embedded in your language of choice. This is something that those who learn alone often forget. Those who learn alone often develop bad habits that can take years to fully correct! That is why these forums are dedicated to providing assistance, correction, and a massive amount of free online resources for you to learn Japanese the right way. No one should learn Japanese alone, but sometimes classrooms don't spend enough time with every student. If you are the type who has an endless supply of questions―this is the place for you.
Why do you want to learn Japanese? Do you plan on living in Japan?
What do you plan to do with you language skills?
Our community is comprised of experienced Japanese speakers who have been to Japan, and of some who have even begun living and working in Japan! We have the answers to your questions, and enough experience to guide you through the process of getting to Japan. We have enough knowledge to help you decide on hotels and locations for your next trip to Tokyo. We have enough knowledge to recommend Japanese companies for you to contact, and for you to avoid. We have enough knowledge to warn you about mandatory cultural behaviors to adopt when in Japan. We are aware that the ultimate goal of a Japanese linguist is to eventually live and work in Japan, and our site has many experienced members who are here to help and educate! If that's your dream; we'll help you get to Japan.
