Sounds really interesting. I might sort of 'play along at home' as in, I'll challenge myself to see how many pages of something I can read, but as I've mentioned in the past, my English reading speed is the same as speaking speed (I've taught myself to speed-read but it doesn't work for fiction for me. It just ruins my enjoyment of the story). My reading in Japanese, with furigana, is also about my Japanese speaking speed, which is naturally slower than my English speaking speed.. Without furigana I have to keep pausing to recall kanji I don't know so well, and I can't resist checking words I can't read or am not sure I got right..
So yeah.. I'll challenge myself and then just try to beat my score next time. Not gonna kid myself I could stand up against people who can read at normal speed! ^^

Yeah, the times I've participated I just picked someone ranked a few places higher than me and tried to beat them. Having fun & practicing reading are way more important than winning for me. Trying to read faster isn't fun for me either, and my reading speed 's fastest when a book's so good it's hard to put down, which is just more motivation for me to try to find books I really like.^-^
