Hi there! My name is MelidyJade and I'm a long-time dabbler in learning the Japanese language from Adelaide, Australia. I'm a lover of everything Japan, all from watching the bad dub of Sailormoon when I was about 10. 19 years later and I'm still in love (perhaps even more so now) with Japan culture, pop culture, literature, history and the language. I'm currently at uni, studying-- well, I'm trying to decide between Medical Science or Communications and Linguistics, both of which are passions of mine. When I'm not studying, I love playing video games, reading Science Fiction, Apocalyptic Fiction and Urban Fantasy books, and absorbing any and all media; whether it be movies, tv, podcasts, YouTube, music etc. For the rest of this year and next year, I would like to take my language learning from the dabbling kind to something that I can use to communicate with people. Unfortunately I don't really know anyone that also learns Japanese near me. Hopefully meeting more people with similar language interests may help me learn good habits and work towards being able to use Japanese to read and communicate with others. So, ah yeah. Hi-- hope I get a chance to meet many of you soon. --MJ

Nice to meet you! You sound cool. ^^
We actually have a member who is a medic and holds an N1 JLPT certificate, so I definitely think you've come to the right place!
4 years ago, I decided to take my learning from casual dabbling to serious study too! It hasn't all been smooth sailing, but it's been a rewarding journey, and I'd love to exchange tips and experiences with you in future!
So make yourself at home, as this is indeed your home now, and please send me or another staff member (Jade, Bokusenou or LittleGaijin) a PM if you'd like to be added to our Line chats. We have an English and a Japanese group, but you are welcome to just observe if you're shy, or still just learning (in the case of the Japanese group). There's no pressure to join in!
xx

Welcome, Melidy Jade!
I can definitely relate to that. It's harder to learn Japanese when you don't know anyone else who speaks it. Finding other people who speak the language definitely makes things easier, and be sure to let us know if you have any questions and such.
Also, like Jembru mentioned, the LINE chat groups are a lot of fun, so if you're on LINE, I would recommend PMing one of the staff your LINE username, so you can be added to the chat groups.
See you around!

Hey Melidy Jade , welcome to the Gaiwa family! I think you came to the right place. Tons of really awesome Japan lovers in our little community, and this is the perfect place to practice your Japanese and ask questions when it comes to learning the language. I also watched Sailor Moon (in that awful English dub haha) when I was younger. And Dragon Ball Z too, maybe that's what started my interest as well haha. Glad to see you've joined the Line groups too! It's a great way to stay connected with everyone. Anyways, do make yourself at home! Welcome to Gaiwa! (Oh by the way, how did you first find out about Gaiwa if you don't mind me asking? I'm always really curious how members discovered us hahaha.)

Thanks for the warm welcome, here and in the Line groups. I'm pretty sure I found the site just by searching for "Japanese learning forum" or "Japanese forum".
I've already been given so many ideas on how to up my Japanese learning, so thank you! Hopefully I will get the courage to start speaking Japanese with people soon!
