I discovered an interesting looking resource my accident and thought it was worth sharing. I thought it would be nice to have a thread just for resources specifically useful for those studying Japanese in order to understand anime and managa, because it's a popular reason for studying. That said, I'm sure many of the resources we share here will be useful for all learners.
So the site I found is called Japanese in Anime and Manga and is by the Japan Foundation, who brought us the ever popular Erin ga chousen Nihongo dekimasu! series.
I only briefly messed about with the site, but you basically pick a category from a list of themes commonly encountered in anime and manga. It then takes you to a page where you can select a scene by clicking on the numbered circle. When you've done that, you will then see a page from a manga. You can click on the speech bubble and it plays a voice clip of the line (great for 'listen and repeat/shadowing' practice), and a translation appears at the bottom of the screen. You can also click on 'cultural information' to learn a bit more about the subject in question.. all very helpful in arming you with the language you'll need to follow anime and manga. They also have vocabulary/kanji games you can use to consolidate what you've learnt.
I've a bit too much in my schedule just now, but I'd definitely like to come back to the site and study the ninja/samurai sections some time. It's a topic I know almost zero about, excluding my detailed knowledge of a certain mechanical space ninja (yoshimitsu <3), and it's something I'll need to fix eventually, saying as ninja/samurai keep sneaking into everything... adverts, tv shows, anime, even my textbooks...once you start studying Japanese, you can't avoid them forever... sneaky damned ninjas...
