This is an experimental thread I'd like to test out to see if others find the idea inspiring. Sometimes it can be hard to find the time or even the motivation to study. Even those of us who enjoy the thrill of cramming in study sessions around our hectic lives, could benefit from breaking up our routine with something a little different. Novelty and obscurity are aids to memory after all!
So here is how I propose this works
-> Members post a small language challenge that their fellow members can attempt. This can be anything from 'learn 10 new words today' to 'write a 2,000 character essay on a subject of your choice and post it on lang-8 for correction'. I suggest that the challenges be written in large coloured font to help them stand out.
-> When you post your challenge, give a serving suggestion of points you think a person should gain from completing the challenge. Perhaps you think your suggestion of 'learn 3 new onomatopoeia' is worth 3 easy points. Maybe Demonhead suggests 'Make a lets play in Japanese', and knowing this won't be easy or even possible for everyone, offers a whopping 30 points to anyone who dares or thinks they're hard enough! ^^ Oh and yes, you can do the challenge yourself. The only 'rule' I'd add is that you must have done it after you set the challenge for it to count.
-> When a member takes up a challenge, please 'quote' the challenge and then post a quick summary.. a link to the 'evidence', a list or description of what you learnt. This is why I suggested to bright bold font for the challenges themselves, so new challenges can be quickly spotted. You can then give yourself the full suggested points, or if you think you didn't complete it 100%, maybe knock a few off.
-> End your post with your current total points!
My hope is that this will help to motivate you to try something new, or just try something at all.
If you're stuck for ideas you can check out LittleGaijin's article 'Ways to Fit Japanese into your Busy Schedule' for some fun challenges, or just take a look at your own recent activity!
