敢為 kan'i staunchness; steadfastness.
I always thought it was "to affect a change", though I could be wrong...

Let's learn about Affect vs Effect! It seems like we all need some help with it... 為替 かわせ exchange (rate); money order

I'd forgotten about this thread. Let's get it going again. There's not much to choose from for 替 so hope I can get away with this... 替え歌 Song parody... 'Wup, wup wup.. like an Enderman....' Seriously, I have a whole playlist on youtube just with Minecraft song parodies... and listen to it more than any other playlist.

Woah, there really aren't many words that START with that character are there? ^^ So I just picked one that ended with an easy kanji to be kind to the next person.
詞書 ことばがき apparently this is some kind of preface. I'm not sure how it differs from はしがき, but jisho.org mentions something about poems and kotobank also mentioned poems so I'm guessing it's specifically the preface to a poetry book. Kotobank also mentioned that it is the annotations or captions that accompany illustrations.

Yeah, looks like it's used for the prefaces in haiku, notes in emaki picture scrolls, and the dialogues in children's picture books.^^

長期 ちょうき a long time/period.
(Also.. thanks Rin! Glad to know I picked such a useful everyday word. Haha. Honestly there was little else to choose from).

Midoriちゃ~~~~~~ん。こんな所で!久しぶりね。何ヶ月でしょう?元気?ガイワでばったり会って嬉しい!(I actually HATE seeing うれしい in kanji.. dunno why I did that, sorry). You know, I realised just now by opening the first page by accident, that when I started this game, you could use any kanji from the previous compound. Wish I'd remembered that a few posts back! 緑茶 りょくちゃ green tea

Eek.. I was going to add えん as another reading for 緑 in my notes and tried to find other examples. Only then did I realise it's a different kanji. Oopse. (as this is the second time I've gotten a character wrong in this thread.. see page 1 for details.. at least you know now I'm not just copying characters into jisho.org, but trying to use my brain. That surely makes my mistakes a good thing, right?)
Anyway, scratch that last one. my new compound is
縁起 えんぎ lucky

Ah cool, I didn't know about the rule where you can use any kanji from the previous person's word. I thought it was like shiritori. In that case: 躍起 やっき desperation/eagerness
It's most commonly used in the phrase ___するのに躍起になっている (going all out in order to ____)
