chocopieThanks! 家族狩り sounds interesting! I like dark shows a lot, I guess because they give me some perspective by making my everyday problems seem tiny in comparison, so I suddenly feel grateful for the little things I normally take for granted, and happy I'm not in the character's shoes. I'd guess most people don't watch dark shows because it makes them feel happy & grateful though. XD I also really like thought-provoking stories, as well as inspiring ones. Hmm, I've heard of Miyabe Miyuki, but I haven't read or watched anything by her yet. She writes mysteries, right? Would ぺトロの葬列 make sense if I haven't seen its prequel?

BokusenouYes, she does write mysteries (apart from the Ico novel). I've only seen the first episode of ぺトロの葬列 and it has a quick montage summary of the previous series. The previous mysteries seem unconnected to this one though so it shouldn't be a problem if you go straight into it. On the other hand if you like it, you may as well watch the first series like I did in two days instead of working on my thesis. I know what you mean by dark shows making you feel grateful. 家族狩り does seem to lay it on a bit thick though. Hopefully all the stories will interconnect clearly, otherwise it'll end up seeming like they put in as many miserable side-stories as possible just for the sake of it.

chocopieOK, I'll check it out then! Hmm, debating whether to check out her writing as well...Apparently a book of her youkai stories just came out in paperback, and I tend to really like most things with youkai. I'll see how I like the drama before I decide. Have you read any of her books before? Yeah, that's true, too much can seem like overkill. I'll check out the first ep & see how I like it.

I grabbed myself the Doremisora box-set while I was in London. It looked a little like Nihonjin no shiranai nihongo but instead of teaching gaijin the main character is teaching students with low grades. I really just picked this because I wanted something with plenty of every day vocabulary that has at least some amusing moments to keep me interested. There wasn't much to choose from, but this was a 12 disc boxset so seemed like good value for money. I'm going to be watching it from work so haven't checked it out yet. In the past I couldn't watch Japanese DVD's from work because the remote for the DVD player was broken and never replaced, so I can't change the language settings and most Japanese DVD's for the UK market default to English. This has no English or subtitles so should be good listening practice for me! I'll let you know if it's any good once I've seen a few episodes.

Jembru Let us know how it goes! Bokusenou Have you had a look at 家族狩り yet? I just watched episodes 3&4 and... what is going on... This is not a drama with a main plot and side plots. I've counted up 10 storylines so far. I don't know where this drama is going but I find myself compelled to watch anyway. Maybe it's meant to be a drama on 'when family goes bad'?? I hope I'll find out eventually...

Jembru Let us know how it goes! I've seen all of disc one and I think I could get into this. Then again, I cried at the conclusion of a storiline on Japanesepod101, so I'm easily entertained. lol The characters are larger than life and the story is quite standard but I like that. Like I'd guessed from the blurb, it's about a woman taking a part time job in a school. It's a private school and she has been given the reject class; 5 under-achieving students who have been assigned to the 'baka-class'.. a dusty old out-house with missing windows and a leaky roof away from the pristine classrooms reserved for the 'good' students. One of the students, Haruka, is devastated to have been sent to that class. Her parents run a small food stand that is struggling against local competition. They worked hard to be able to get the money together to send Haruka to such an expensive school so she is determined to work her way out of the class and do them proud. Her classmates are less determined; a foul-mouthed girl who wants to be a model and only joined the school to meet rich boys, a shy girl who doesn't speak to anyone, a derpy guy who spends most of his time sleeping and a guy (I'm guessing one of the main characters along with Haruka eventually) who got into the school on a scholarship because of his promising football (soccar) skills but then injured his leg and was unable to do the only thing he was good at. He refuses to show up to class and just sits around campus feeling sorry for himself. His parents run the local store that is competing with Haruka's parents. He's been lying to them and saying he's in the top class. The antagonist is the teacher of the top class in the school, although I'm not sure exactly why he is so hell bent on sabbotaging the kids' chances of leaving the baka class and joining the rest of the students. It was maybe explained and I didn't understand. As far as I can tell, he just doesn't like the teacher. She was late on her first day and kinda rude to him at the door, but is wanting rid of a colleague really a reason to harm a child's education? (EDIT: I watched the whole first disc again and it seems he's concerned about the average grades being dragged down, so he and another teacher are trying to convince the kids to transfer to a state school. I still haven't seen the second disc, but I have a suspicion it's going to take a musical twist. It's being strongly hinted at anyway.) Haha, I'm already showing concern for the characters. Maan I AM easy! So that's it really. I think Haruka's dad is a well-known comedian. I'm sure I've seen him before while watching Japanese TV. I don't recognise anyone else though.

Not yet, I've been kind of busy with learning stuff for work lately, and I'm behind on watching stuff. I'll get to it! I'll just probably have a mini-watching stuff marathon after things get a little less hectic.

Well, I've finally forced myself to put in the final disc. I've found it really hard to bring myself to finish doremisora. I don't usually watch dramas, and don't enjoy English language soaps, but despite buying this only for listening practice.. thinking it would be just an excuse to listen to Japanese, I got really hooked. It's such a lame story, yet I can't get enough of it. I'm going to feel so lost when the story concludes.. so much for thinking it would be a school musical type drama.. no one has sang a single line besides 6 seconds in the teacher's flashbacks....
Why is it only 48 epsodes?

Hey, do any of you know which network broadcast the series 'Naoki Hanzawa'? We need it for 15 across in the crossword thread. The clue is "日本で大ヒットしているドラマ「半沢直樹」の放送局" Feel free to reply there if you like.

Thank you, thank you, thank you Jade! I needed it to begin with a 't'. There seems to have been a typo on the crossword, but the misspelled word fits in this case!
Thanks for the link too. As you know, I'm on the hunt for another drama. I had been watching hotaru no hikari, and really got into the first series. I think because I could identify with the lead character. But then I was so annoyed by episode 1 of series 2 that I've given up on that one now.

Has anyone seen an old series called 'Densha Otoko'? I'm going to start watching it later today and I think it sounds right up my street.
Last night my friends and I met someone from the language group for the first time. She's a really lovely girl from London who's up here studying Japanese at uni. She told me about this drama and my Japanese friends were very enthusiastic about the series. Saying as I real soft spot for anything nerdy, and enjoyed the anime 'welcome to the NHK', I think this sounds great.
I really can't wait to get into this one. Hope it's as fun and as touching at times, as my friends promise it will be!

I haven't seen the drama, but I watched the movie at Chubu and I liked it❤︎ I think I was told the drama was a sequel, but I'm not sure.

I've heard of the story, it seems really well known in Japan, and I think you can even find the original 2ch threads archived somewhere because I remember looking through them (lots of net slang). I've never seen the drama or movie though. Tell us how it goes!

Anyone watching any dramas this season? I'm planning on watching Gakkou no Kaidan, Second Love, and Itazura na Kiss 2. If anyone's interested, you can watch the first episode of Gakkou no Kaidan (and every episode after that after they air) for free on the official website (you may need Hola! Unblocker/Hola! Better Internet enabled first though!).
