Naitorii recently mentioned in another thread, that he hasn't been focusing so much on grammar. It made me notice something. This seems to be a fairly common issue for people teaching themselves Japanese online. Well, I at least know of 3 people who have reported the same difficulty. So it got me wondering, what decent resources are there, for a beginner, to learn grammar online for free?
Midori would be a good person to talk to about this, because as far as I know, she used the Internet a lot in the earlier stages of study, and she is quite a grammar junky. I'm sure she'll have a few recommendations.
Of course, my instinct is always to point people to japanesepod101, but this isn't free. My next favourite site, because it is useful whatever stage you are from beginner to intermediate (depending on how you use the material) is erin.ne.jp. I'm not sure how clear the grammar explanations are for an absolute beginner though. When I was going through it, I used to like to watch entire episodes on youtube first and then hop over to the corresponding lesson on the website to play about with the study material. I was already somewhere around the early intermediate stage by the time I discovered it though, so I can't claim to have learnt grammar from it. I've actually started going through the episodes again, because I've noticed I'm starting to get sloppy with the basics! I covered beginners grammar in short intervals spread over many years, so I never really consolidated that knowledge. The rest of my language learning has been on shaky foundations as a result, which could explain why I'm so sloppy with grammar!
It's not flashy, but for plain English explanations there is always about.com's Japanese section. I think it covers most of what you'd find in a beginners text book such as genki or Japanese for busy people, and it's free!
Oh and while not really for comprehensive coverage of foundation grammar, you can learn some fun and interesting grammar points from Maggie Sensei Although Maggie has sadly passed away, she was the best grammar teacher on 4 legs! RIP Maggie.. (T.T)
So, does anyone else have tips for a beginner looking for free grammar lessons online?
