I don't know if anyone will have any direction for me on this. There are so many options! Dorms, capsule hotels, Hostels, B&B's, homestay, etc. I do not think I want to homestay. There are some great deals on hostels like Ninja right by my school in Akihabara. Does anyone have any information first hand or otherwise?

How about foreigner-friendly shared houses? (Here's an article introducing the idea. It's also got some links to some known shared houses in Tokyo if you scroll down a bit.) TUJ requires students to stay in the dorms for one semester, but find their own housing for the rest of their semesters during their time at the school. I know that if I can't find a roommate, or an apartment to rent myself, I'm planning to sign up at a foreigner-friendly shared house! Here's a few more links to some foreigner-friendly shared housing sites in Tokyo that I found: Borderless House and Create Shared House. Hopefully all these links help you out, if you're interested!

Thanks LG! I investigated those leads and ended up settling on Sakura House. I have a bed, in a dorm, in a Sakura House property, very close to my school in the Akihabara area. So far it is looking like it will cost about 80000 yen for my 5 week stay. I just paid my deposit. The exchange rate has turned swung back to a stronger yen again at 1 yen to .9625 U.S. dollar.

I'm really glad I could help! I stumbled across Sakura House before I think, and it seems like a really great place to live! Don't forget to share pictures of the house with us (if you can) once you get there. I'd really love to see it!

I settled on Sakura house. They are located all over the place and they offer rooms , shared rooms, shared house, etc. I think the biggest selling point of Sakura House is the price. They are really affordable. One of the cool aspects of living in a Gaijin house is your roomeates are from all over the world. The preffered langauge is usually English because everyone speaks it. Of course many countries have a working holiday plan with Japan so those people are here a long time and they all speak verying amounts of Japanese. The Sakura House I am at is in Taito Ku this is a very col historic art of Tokyo that is right on the famous and beautiful Sumidagawa. I am also very close to a good Japanese language school, the one I am attending. The Intercultural Institute of Japan. If anyone has any questions let me know.

That sounds really good! Is there a limit on how long you have to stay, or could someone visiting Japan for just a week or two stay there? If so, it's definitely worth thinking about when I finally get my behind back over there! I have friends who offered to let us stay with them, but there is only so long you can stay at someone's home before feeling like a burdon. A gaijin house sounds ideal.

Hmm, I've been debating on where to stay, too. I'm going to TUJ but I'm married so most likely I'll be able to opt out of the housing requirement but my husband will be joining me about a month and a half after my arrival (he's going to a language school and they have different entrance dates). It's a little too long for a hotel but also too short to just stay the whole summer semester in the dorms. I'll probably end up going with a sharehouse, or maybe I'll just start on an apartment myself! @.@ that'd be a little difficult all by myself though!

Princess If you have a vague idea of where you want to find an apartment, Kimi Information Center has an apartment search form, and they'll go into apartments and take photos for you. They've also got pages with the details of apartments with cheap rent, a page that lists apartments you can apply for while overseas, etc, etc. (Also, welcome to the forum❤)

Hello, I am headed back to Japan in May again. I guess I like the rain. : ) I am tired so I might have missed a more appropriate thread for this dribble... then again, I don't really have a point. I guess I was curious who else will be in Tokyo then... I am thinking to stay in that cheap hotel area in the north Asakusa area. It looks like I can get a dorm room for about 400 for three weeks. That would be great. I was thinking to do school again, but the options for short term group classes are very narrow. I'm not sure I want to do Intercul again. I am so anxious to be back in Taito ku though I freakin love that area and I miss the Sumidagawa. Soooo.. if this sparks any thoughts or advice let me know.

Since then I've found jvloggers promoting a site called Airbnb! It looks amazing, as it's mostly foreigners renting out a bed, bedroom, or whole apartment for X amount of time. Great way to meet people and so far it's one of the cheapest options, depending on where you are staying! I think that's what I'll end up doing!

Thank you very much. There are some great options there. At present it looks like I could stay in Shinjuku for a very reasonable price. My Japanese friend teaches English at a school very close to there and he lets me attend the classes and it is a very interesting way to learn Japanese. When are you going to be there Princess? I am waiting for a better ticket price. Right now I am looking at $1500.00 U.S. dollars and I want to get below 1300.00. I have with United though, because I have a lot of miles with them, and my next flight to Japan after this one will be free... well, it will be 70K miles. : )

When I was there last spring I visited your school and bicycled from it to the dormitory LG is staying in and filmed the rout and photographed everything for her. Are you staying at the same housing? It is in a very pretty and fun area. I am jealous. How long has she been there now? We don't talk as much as we used to. What is your Japanese proficiency? Can you have rudimentary conversation or???

I won't be there until May and I won't be in the same housing cuz I'm married and I'll be opting out and staying in a sharehouse type thingy! I think LG has been there since last fall? I'm sad I haven't been able to go yet, one less semester with her! xO hehe!
And oh gosh, I'm just starting learning you could say. I am barely scraping by in a Beginning Japanese 2 class, which we use the last half of Japanese for Busy People textbook. I do well on my tests but I actually tested into this class (barely) and am behind on a lot of vocab D:
