(Not sure if maybe this would be better in resource recommendations but...) I'm really into Japan's Yahoo for watching the news in Japanese right now. I have been dipping into News in Slow Japanese now and then since Jan because I thought it would be a good way to get a feel for the language they use in the news. It's a little bit too simplified though. Don't get me wrong, it's absolutely ideal for my current level, with just the right balance of familiar language and new expressions presented in each piece. It's just that I want to be able to experience the news in Japanese without it being simplified for learners too. Also, the site doesn't cover really topical/hard hitting subjects like murder and terrorism. It's more 'kittens in teacups' kinda news (which is fine, but it's good to be able to join in with passionate discussions too). In particular, it's the video section that I'm finding useful. Especially because there is a written synopsis below each video. This allows me to go over the text and pick out keywords that I don't recognise. I can then play the video back and enjoy listening out for my new vocabulary, reinforcing my learning of it! If the story really affects me, I will make a video journal about it and that lets me use some of the new vocabulary too. Just something I thought it would be worth sharing in case others find it useful too.

Jembru I've been listening to News In Slow Japanese for a while but only just stumbled upon the video section thanks to your above comment! I appreciate it, this looks very helpful.

The video section I was talking about is from a different site, that is aimed at Japanese viewers rather than foreign language learners. News in Slow Japanese does include original video footage of the story you study though, so I think maybe you mean that section? It's really handy isn't it? You can study the simplified version of the story and then listen to the full-blown Japanese version. Already having the main vocabulary down by that point definitely helps! In that way, it's similar to studying from Japanese yahoo news. The main difference being that the subject matter is a bit more 'family friendly' on News in Slow Japanese!

Great site Jembru! I've also found www.fnn-news.com to be really helpful, because their videos have transcripts.
