I didn't take a tv when I started college years ago, and I haven't really watched it since. When I used to watch it, the only programs I watched were informational ones, things on the science channel, history channel (before it got rid of all the history shows), sometimes national geographic, etc. Actually I don't think I ever found many non-informational tv shows I really enjoyed before I found out about anime.^-^; So I guess I can't be much help in recommending tv shows. I remember I liked Sanctuary because it was sort of like the tv show version of youkai of the week type anime, and the mythical creatures weren't evil. I think I still need to see the last season of it though. Maybe after my Japanese improves some more.

I actually watch very little TV (and hardly listen to music, rarely have time to read, lack the attention span necessary to watch movies and generally seem to live in a bubble removed from 'the mainstream'). When I DO watch TV, I really like the show QI (Quite Interesting). I think I've probably seen just about every episode and many of them more than 10 times. lol
If I'm not out with the conversation group, I'm always at the dining table studying on my evenings off work, so JP dominates the TV if he is home. Our TV is also the monitor for his PC, so it's used for that more than it is used for watching TV.
It's not showing right now, but I loved the US remake of Wilfred and can't wait for the next series. It's so bizarre.
Oh and of course, I must mention Doctor Who. If there is anything we deliberately tune in for each week, it is Doctor Who. I grew up with the show, as my dad was a massive fan (and still is). Christmas day is all about Doctor Who in our family these days (we're not Christian and celebrate our religious winter festival on 21st, so 25th is more a secular thing/continuation of our midwinter celebrations, in our family). We time our Christmas dinner so it ends just in time to pour fresh drinks before Doctor Who starts, then we sit in silence watching it. Afterwards, we enthusiastically talk about every single detail of the show, make guesses for where the serious will go and of course, call everyone who couldn't be there, on speaker phone, to see what THEY thought of the episode.
The night I met JP, he said he was really into Doctor Who, and I just knew there and then that he belonged in our family! He LOVES Christmas with us, and couldn't imagine being anywhere else on 25th December. ^^

Currently my favorite show is Heroes. If you're into Sci-fi shows then you would definitely love this show. It's about all these people with super powers and the show lasted 4 seasons. Its a really good psychological thriller. There's even a Japanese character and a lot of the dialog between him and his best friend is in Japanese.

I heard everything but the last season of Heroes was good, or was it everything but the first season was bad? I don't remember lol As for Doctor Who, I was into it for the RTD-era (Eccleston was my favourite♥), but Moffat's Doctor Who is kind of lacking and I'm really worried as to how the 50th anniversary episode is going to go because I don't trust Moffat's writing/characterisation worth a damn >.>;; I've heard good things about Sanctuary! My dad's really fond of it actually lol I haven't gotten around to watching it though

Heroes starts off amazing but it slowly starts to go a little downhill in season 3. Don't get me wrong, it still really awesome and I definitely recommend it.
If you like comedies the watch The Office(The American version of course) and Community. They are both my two favorite shows and even though The Office is over its still an awesome show to watch.

Well... I for one was not disappointed by the 50th anniversary episode of Dr.Who! This was a big event in my family! It's been a long night. Lol
As for Moffat's doctor... I wasn't too impressed until midway through this last series. I think the companions just didn't fit before... It was like tennant's sloppy seconds. Clara made a huge difference. I like moffat as a writer though. Midori and I discussed this (in Japanese), on the old forum, but I think he has written some amazing episodes.. the empty child... silence in the library... The doctor dances... Blink.... Think about it, these are some of the most epic episodes since the return of the series. He's by no means a bad writer, and brings a heck of a lot to the franchise...
Sorry, I've been partying with my family. I'll edit out my partially phone induced typos tomorrow.

History channel's "Vikings" drama premiered season two last week, and I really fell back in love with this show! If anyone loves Game of Thrones as much as I do, and can't wait for April 6 to roll around the corner, I highly suggest giving this show a shot! Also keeping up with Reign and the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon each week/day.
(Been wanting to resurrect this thread!)

I love watching Vikings... I didn't discover it until two weeks ago, so I was able to pick up Season 2 right when I was done with Season 1. It's pretty awesome.
I'm also watching The Americans, Person of Interest, Elementary, Sherlock, Perception (for some reason), and Blacklist for action and drama.
I watch the Daily Show, the Colbert Report, Big Bang Theory, and the various funny animation shows monopolied by Seth McFarlane.
I am watching one TV show from Japan, and that's 孤独のグルメ(こどくのぐるめ). I really love food, so that show really speaks to me. Haha.

Aryth yes, another Vikings fan!! Last year, at first, I didn't think the history channel could pull off a drama this good, but I was pleasantly surprised! Ragnar's son will grow up to be an adult at some point in season two, and I'm really excited to see what kind of person he'll be. I also watch Sherlock (not the newest season yet), Blacklist, and the Big Bang Theory!

LittleGaijinYeah, seriously. After Pawn Stars, Ancient Aliens and Counting Cars I wasn't sure if the History channel would make anything worth watching. But, I saw the pilot episode on Amazon and it pretty much blew my mind. Woah, if he's going to be an adult at some point, I can't imagine what he'll be like. That is pretty exciting. Sherlock was hard to get through since each episode is movie-length. It's fun to watch though. Blacklist grew on me. I didn't like it at first, but I'm glad I stuck with it because right now it's pretty deep. The Big Bang Theory is just really funny, and that it stays funny after this many seasons is nothing short of a miracle (to me).

Aryth yeah, there's a major time-skip in episode two of the second season, and so many interesting new plot twists now! I'm excited for you to catch up to season two!! (Just got done watching tonight's episode, haha.) History channel really does have such a massive hit with this show. Yes, that's the reason why I haven't been up-to-date with the newest Sherlock episodes! Too many piled up, and I just don't have the time to sit through 3-4 hours of Sherlock episodes. But it really is a great show, and I love to watch it with friends if I can. Love the humor in it. Blacklist is really interesting, I like it a lot. I'm excited to see who Elizabeth Keen's husband really works for (next Monday), and when Red will finally reveal himself as her father. And BBT just speaks my language, and it's so funny!

Watching series is how I spend my time when I should be studying...
I am following several series, that I have to keep up with every week.
As of now, I have finished: Breaking Bad, The Vampire Diaries, Doctor Who, Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead
(Some of these still air new episodes every week, but I've watched every episode up until now, awaiting new ones. A few have finished the current season and I'll have to wait a looong time for new episodes)
Currently watching The Originals (11/21 episodes), and One Piece (~600/645 episodes)
Other than One Piece I've watched about 600 hours of other animes.
Reading this; I should get a life :/ xD

Does anyone know any good non-US educational channels, by any chance? Or ones which just show a lot of educational specials/documentaries? I've been playing NHK documentaries in the background while I work on things, but lately I've been feeling like listening to educational channels and such in English once in a while. I used to play the History Channel & Science Channel in the background before I started learning Japanese & hadn't gotten rid of my TV yet, but I checked out the former on streams, and they seem to have gotten worse since I've been away from TV, while I couldn't even find the latter. Then I remembered one time, a while back, when I was going through streams looking for Olympics coverage on the BBC channels, I found this cool documentary on Alexander the Great, and ended up playing that in the background instead. Unfortunately I went back to Olympics coverage after it was over and forgot which channel showed the documentary. T-T I searched through and couldn't find it again, but that experience made me wonder if there was a whole bunch of educational channels I didn't know to try because they were outside the US. Jade Oh really? That's cool. My dad actually introduced me to it because he knew I liked youkai shows where the youkai aren't good or bad, but kind of in between.^^
