アナちゃんは最近違ったタイプのおみくじを手に入れて、意味は明らかじゃなくて、いい経験になると思うから、ガイワの皆さんと協力して翻訳してみたくなったんだ。占いはいつも個人的な意味が付けることができるようにある程度曖昧なので、これもなんかフワフワだと思う。だから力を合わせて解こうとするのは面白くなるでしょう!
Anna recently received a different type of omikuji. The meaning wasn't immediately apparent so I thought it would be good experience to try to translate it with the help of my fellow gaiwa-jins. I guess all fortunes are vague to some extent so you can attach your own personal meaning to them, so that might explain why this one is a bit unclear. This should be fun!
英語に直接翻訳すると、日本語をちゃんと受け取ったかどうかは分からないから、まず、意味を日本語で説明したいと思う。
If I translate straight into English it won't be clear whether or not I really understood the Japanese (did I just translate word for word without understanding? Or did I change the wording to make it more natural, or because I just didn't understand it correctly in the first place?), so I'll start (in my next post), with a Japanese-Japanese translation.
それじゃ、まず最初はオリジナル文章を打ち取る。。。
So first off I'll type out the original text...
「多くの人々と並んで行く世の中で、たとえ、地の人々にはおくれることがあっても、あまり急いで、正しい道を踏みあやまらないでほしいのでです。
成功を急いで、方法を選ばず、終には大きな失敗を招いた実例は沢山あります。急がば廻というたとえのように、最初の信念を貫いて、正しい道を着実に進みましょう。
(堅実な歩みが大切です)」
(typed in a hurry at work and copied and pasted from google so sorry for any errors). Okay, meet me in the next post.. ^^

「多くの人々と並んで行く世の中で、たとえ、地の人々にはおくれることがあっても、あまり急いで、正しい道を踏みあやまらないでほしいのでです。」
この世界には大勢の人が同時に生活している。そんなに人はいれば、自分より進んでいる人も当然にいるでしょう。それにしても、その人に追及するように急いで選択をしたら、注目や注意なし、選択を誤る傾向はある。進路を間違えないように時間を取ってどうしたいとゆっくり考えてください。 There are a great number of people in the world and as such it is inevitable that some people will be ahead of you in life. However, if you try to rush ahead and catch up to them, you're likely to make poor decisions. Take your time to think carefully about what you want to do, so as not to mess up your future path.
「成功を急いで、方法を選ばず、終には大きな失敗を招いた実例は沢山あります。急がば廻というたとえのように、最初の信念を貫いて、正しい道を着実に進みましょう。」
速く成功を収めたいから、人が油断して失敗しまった実例が結構ある。「急がば廻れ」ということわざをしっかり身につけてください。自分の元の信念を大切にしながら、ゆっくり進んでください。 There are many examples of people who become architects of their own demise in their haste to achieve success. Take heed of the saying 'slow and steady wins the race', and go forth steadily with your true values at the heart of your decisions.
「(堅実な歩みが大切です)」
着実な足元で歩くのは大切です Great journeys begin with a sound step.
What do you think? Hope you can see why I wanted to include a more literal Japanese version of what I believe each line means. The English works for me, but I think I've changed the wording quite a lot in places, especially that last line, and I didn't want people to think I was just making it up as I go along!

Great thread idea Jem! On first glance, one thing I might change is on the second part, 方法を選ばず seems to show that it's referring to people who were so wracked with indecision that they didn't end making any choice at all, and that's what brings doom upon them. Although that I guess probably can be implied by the translation anyway.

So if it is kind of included in the English version, it was by accident. Had I included it, I had understood that part differently anyway. I thought it meant 'without considering the options', as in, just blindly following an arbitrary path. ^^ Wanna do the first page? It's pretty much the same thing in fewer words as far as I can tell, but it reads a bit fancier! Oh yeah, and remember I wrote that I took a line a different way at first? It was that very first line:「多くの人々と並んで行く世の中で...」when I first read it, I took the 並ぶ as meaning you have a lot of people supporting you (as in 'walking side by side'). It was only when I read again, and so had a better idea where it was going, that I realised it was just using the road as a metaphor so describing the human race as all travelling along it in the same direction (and I guess we are in a way, at least in temporal terms!

Thought of another point.. in the translation, would it work better to use 'or'? So 'There are many examples of people who become architects of their own demise in their haste to achieve success,or their hesitation to make up their minds.'

Good idea! OK, here's the front:
ならび行く人にはよしやおくるとも ただしき道をふみなたがへそ
I think it's just the first part of the back side's text in older Japanese. This part: 多くの人々と並んで行く世の中で、たとえ、地の人々にはおくれることがあっても、あまり急いで、正しい道を踏みあやまらないでほしいのでです。
よしや = たとえ according to the dictionary. Maybe へそ is 欲しい?
