I am so forum inept. I fear I am probably starting another thread that exists somewhere, but I did search. Anyhow, I just ordered my awesome new Dell tablet. I am a serious computer user, but I have never had a smartphone or a tablet. I am buying this thing to help with my language studies, and for my May trip to Japan. <doing a little going to Japan dance> So, can anyone tell me what I need to do to turn my new tablet into a Japanese language learning device beyond belief? I want an awesome Kanji study game/app and all the Buddhist bells and Japanese whistles. it's a Google Android.

If you start a thread that already exists, no worries! A thread could be long dead, and new members wouldn't be able to find it anyways. And plus, more threads, the better! - On my iPod, I'm currently using imawa? for my Japanese dictionary (it's amazing). I stand by this app as the best online Japanese dictionary available, aside from Weblio.
- Japanese, a game created by Mindsnacks. I use it to brush up on my beginner vocab when I'm sitting in waiting rooms, and it helps to make sure the vocab sticks! Note, it's not entirely free!
- And, for remembering kanji and the strokes, I use Kanji Star. It'll show you a kanji on the screen, disappear, and leave you write it out with the correct stroke order.
Rin and the others might have much better suggestions, but these are what I currently use and they are perfect for me. Hope it helps in your search a little! Excited for you to go to Japan and share your pictures/videos with us! Note: I only have an iPod, but hopefully you'll be able to find some of these on your android phone!

I almost exclusively use mine for anki. It's so bad that when I can't find it, I'll even say to JP, 'have you seen my anki?' or I'll ask him, 'can I borrow your cable to charge my anki?' I'd say I refer to it as my 'anki' much more than 'tablet'. ^^
Besides anki, I also sometimes listen to my Jpod lessons on it while I'm at work. I can't use it for much else though, because it's really slow to type on it (and even worse to type in Japanese). If typing was easier, I'd definitely install line and skype so I can have cheeky chats while I'm at work. Getting a new one is definitely on my to-do list, but I've just ordered a £110 bookcase for our study, so it will have to wait until another payday. ^^
Oh not on my android, but on my phone, I use regular internet sites too. I'm always using jisho.org on when I'm out with my friends because I don't have a real denshi jisho. I also play the kanji games on nihongo-pro when I'm on the bus or just generally bored.

Oh, I forgot to mention podcasts! Jemma and Jade got me hooked on those, and now I'll listen to JapanesePod101 and (especially) SBS Japanese when I'm too lazy to actually study, or if I want to really challenge myself. "SBS Japanese" is a radio show voiced by Japanese natives, and they talk about issues and recent news from Japan. I'm not sure if it was created for Japanese learners, but it doesn't seem like it (entirely) which makes me feel really good whenever I can understand an entire episode.

I have an android phone, but not a tablet. The Japanese apps I use most are: AnkiDroid Vertical Text Reader (for Aozora Bunko formatted text) EBPocket (for using EPWING dictionary files) Aedict (for their search by kanji radical function) Swype (keyboard which makes it easy to switch between Japanese and English) 7 Notes with mazec (handwriting pad)

I have an android phone. AnkiDroid Vertical Text Reader - used to use until I got a Kindle JED (Dictionary) - has kanji look-up by radical, search words by category, you can tag words you've looked up to sort them into lists which I believe can be exported. I think the interface is a bit cleaner than Aedict. GO Keyboard - for switching between English and Japanese input SmartNews - a news aggregator app 学校ネット株式会社 - make a variety of learning apps mainly aimed at 小中学生. Most are free! iPP Podcast Player - There are loads of podcast players, but I chose this one because you can choose a country and then browse podcasts in that language if you're not sure what you want to listen too. Maybe we should make a separate podcasts thread?

Maybe we should make a separate podcasts thread? Oh, a podcast thread is a really good idea!! At the moment, I only listen to two Japanese-related podcasts right now, so I'm anxious to hear everyone's favorites and recommendations! I feel like we need more new threads too! ♪

Ah, podcast apps! I use BeyondPod, but any one which lets you filter by language or region is going to be useful for Japanese learners.

Thanks again for all the tips folks. I grabbed a bunch of them. I really liked my app that allowed me to draw kanji on the screen and it would correct my stroke order, but it went haywire after a few days. I need another one like this. any tips?

Does Kanji Star have an android version? That's the only one I can think of at the moment, but I'm sure that there's more out there! I'll do a quick search if android doesn't have KS and no one else can think of anything!

Okay wes1378, so I found these two apps that (presumably) help you remember kanji stroke orders as you draw on the screen, for Google Android. The app that went buggy might've been one of these two, but hopefully you can try out the other one. Kanji Quiz and Kanji Draw 40%. I'm hoping that these are what you're looking for!

Thanks! I only take the time to visit a place with wifi once a week. I bought it for my trip to Japan and I don't even have a case for it yet so I don't carry it around. I will write these down and look them up.

OMG!!! So frustrated!!! I know this is not a technical android forum, but I could really use some help. > I have Ankidroid on my tablet > I have files for anki in the storage of my tablet in the download folder because that's where they go automatically > I need the anki file to be in the anki folder > I can't move the file, I downloaded a file manager app and it doesn't move files either! > How in the heck do I direct downloads to the appropriate file? > How do I move a file from my downloads folder to my Anki folder? たすけてください!!!

wes1378, you can't direct files to download to anywhere other than the download folder. This might be very obvious but have you tried long pressing the folders to select them? Then you should get an option to do something with them. What file managing app have you got?

Is this somethng that happens when you use pre-made Anki decks, or are these YOUR Anki saves?
I've only ever added my own content to Anki, but maybe this applies. I just signed in with my user name when I installed Anki droid and then synced it with my desk top version via ankiweb. So can't you put these files onto Anki via your PC and then just sync up like I did? Sorry if it's more complicated than that. I just know that worked for me, but like I say, I wrote my Anki cards myself so it might have been different. Hope you work something out. Technology can be a real pain. It makes me cry....
